New Fantasy Premier League Transfers 2018/19 Max Meyer, Alfie Mawson, Alexsandar Mitrovic and Yoshinori Muto
Welcome to New Fantasy Premier League Transfers 2018/19 – Max Meyer, Alfie Mawson, Alexsandar Mitrovic and Yoshinori Muto. This edition is very much the ‘M’ edition so is probably why they recruited me to write it. M is the 13th letter of the Alphabet and this certainly feels like my 13th article of preseason but c’est la vie! Here we have two familiar faces and two not so familiar ones. AT was a bit premature on his Fulham article as they have gone and signed two names that are experienced in the Premier League in Alfie Mawson and Aleksandar Mitrovic. The other two names you may not know too well and that is Max Meyer to Crystal Palace and Yoshinori Muto to Newcastle. Each of these signings could be useful for us fantasy managers so here is the rundown on each.
Max Meyer – 6.0mil
We start with a young German midfielder that was once considered the future of German football, but in recent years Meyer’s stature has declined a bit. This is probably why Meyer moved to Crystal Palace on a free rather than doing what other top talents in Germany do and sign for Bayern Munich. The central midfielder can play both defensive and attacking roles and tends to stay central either as a DM, CM or AM but has been known to play on the wings and up top. Even though he has played in attacking roles in the last three seasons, Meyer has only scored 6 goals in league football with 5 of those coming three seasons ago. The 15/16 season was his last prolific season, Meyer grabbed 6 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances in all competitions. He may not score many goals, but he can be a provider. In the last three seasons Meyer has assisted 16 times, so with Zaha and Townsend bombing down the wings around him he has plenty of pace to aim at! A possible downside to Meyer could be his adaptation to English football, perhaps a wait and see approach is probably best for this player. Another thing to keep an eye on is his propensity for picking up yellow cards, grabbing 14 in the last 3 seasons, well, at least he wasn’t sent off.
Alfie Mawson – 5.0 mil
We move onto someone who we do know more about and who has been quite popular amongst FPL managers in the last few seasons, centre-back Alfie Mawson. Mawson has recently been awarded a return to the Premier League after Swansea’s relegation last season when new boys Fulham signed the youngster for about £15 million. Mawson has only been around the block for 5 years now and two of them have been in the Prem with Swansea. In that time he has made quite a name for himself winning the young player of the year at Swansea in his debut season and getting called up to the England squad back in February. I will only focus on his time in the top flight and that is only 65 games, but in that time he has got as many goals as Meyer. 6 goals, 1 assist and 4 yellow cards puts him ahead of Meyer in terms of average. We all know his quality and danger on set pieces and with wingers like Schurrle and Sessegnon and the midfielder Cairney, there should be plenty of opportunity for the big man. One hiccup to this asset is the fact he has been priced at 5.0; this makes him the most expensive way into the Fulham defence, but the flipside of this is he should be nailed and will definitely shore up the Fulham side, if that’s even possible.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – 6.5 mil
We stay at Craven Cottage for this one as Fulham managed to bring back Mitro, the man who was transformed under his national compatriot, Slaviša Jokanović. Mitro started the season at Newcastle where he had some… attitude problems and this resulted in him only appearing 6 times and grabbing 1 goal. This all changed come January when Mitrovic was sent out on loan to Fulham and in that time, he helped elevate the Cottagers, as he scored 12 goals and 1 assist in 17 games. The returns he got in such a short period of time shows exactly why Jokanović went back to the much loved, Mike Ashley (trust me everybody loves him, especially Rangers and Newcastle fans!) and made the deal permanent. If Mitrovic can continue last season’s form, then he could be that 3rd striker we have all been searching for. Coming in at the same price as Ryan Sessegnon (who is not experienced in the PL) he could be the better option as a sort of an ‘expensive’ bargain of sorts. He would be a bit pricier than the likes of Sorloth, Austin or Reid, but he will be nailed on and you wouldn’t have to worry about his minutes. Now, I have said Mitro has had some attitude problems, but that is more off-the-field because in terms of yellow cards he has only got 3, 3 and 4 in the last few seasons in England. If you are playing 3-4-3 definitely consider Mitrovic who could end up being a decent differential.
Yoshinori Muto – 6.0 mil
It’s a case of one out, one in at St. James’ Park or as the Geordies love to call it, Sports Direct Arena. It feels like a bad devolution from Mitro to Muto, as Mitro leaves with the record above and Muto…meh. Muto is 3 years older than his predecessor and has only spent 3 seasons outside Japan. These 3 seasons weren’t bad though as he scored 20 goals and had 10 assists in 66 games in the Bundesliga. These stats earned Muto a call-up to the World Cup this summer, but he was unable to score during the Japanese run. There isn’t much to warn against on Muto as he has only earned 11 yellow cards in his entire career and can score and assist, but I don’t know what it is, this transfer just fails to excite. Rafa might be able to work wonders and make this 6.0 mil player an absolute baller, but it is definitely a wait and see from me, especially with the terrible fixtures the Geordies have for the first 8 GWs. This is plenty of time for the Japanese man to settle in and hopefully go on a scoring spree when the fixtures turn in Newcastle’s favour starting GW9.

thoughts?
Swap Trippier for Davies and I like it
Rumour is Munas Dabbur for Palace from Salzburg p32 g22 a5 in the Bundisliga. Zaha’s replacement or team mate?
I’d prefer him to stay at Palace, fantasy-wise, rather than being one of many at a bigger team.
But will be an interesting few days, transfer-wise. I’m keeping an eye on people doing a runner from Chelsea in particular.
I think he will stay at Palace. Looking more likely that Willian and Hazard are going to stay. However Hazard has been granted an extra day off which is a bit strange
Chelsea players are quite thinly owned. Quite a few have Azpi or Alonso. Then it’s Kante.
I’m really interested to see how they line up today and how they play.
There are a few rumours suggesting Zaha could end up at Chelsea.
Yeah more rumours on Zaha this morning. Fabregas has a minor knock so will miss out today. Azpilicueta and Alonso are looking at starting in a back four with Luiz and Rudiger in the middle. Jorginho will hold, Kante will take one slot but not today. Other spot will be Fabregas or Barkley probably Fab next week but Chelsea still being linked with midfielders. Morata will play down middle with Hudson Adoi and Pedro on flanks. Hazard obviously to come in but likely on bench for GW1. Willian will battle it out with the other two.
Is it risky going with a 4.5m & 4m keepers ????????
No. I wish I had the nerve to do it myself.
Nah not at all! Fabianski would be the most likely at that price for me
I got burnt by it last season so yeah there is a risk but has worked for me previously. I’m almost certain to just go with Patricio this season
A little risky but should be worth it from the start, rather unlikely a goalie gets injured… If it happens you have the WC in the backpocket…
No riskier than going with a £5.5 and a £4.0 and lots happy to do that!
As it’s early thought I’d post my team again. Any suggestions? Pedro might be Jota
I really like is Smash. Shaw being the only possible concern. The whole 6.5 million question is a tough one. Jota could be amazing, he’s been in the majority of my drafts but worried about him being like Ritchie last season. Pedro signed a new deal so would expect him to start. My first draft had Mili for palace, he got a pen yesterday and I think he could be worth looking at. So overall yeah I like it lol
I like it.
Having the bottle to go with 8.5m over 2 GK’s is obviously freeing up cash elsewhere. Arnie’ fixtures are poor to start, you thought about Zaha or perhaps Josh King as a ‘left-field’ choice? He’s 6.5 which might help upgrade one of your bench, though it looks more and more as though Obi-Wan could be the £4m starter we all look for.
Arnie does have poor fixtures to start. Him down the middle is very appealing to me though and West Ham will be attacking. Mitro is tempting instead and I’m still not convinced by Zaha. Strong rumours about Chelsea which would mean Pedro is in trouble as well though
Thanks yeah Ritchie and Ince worry me about promoted players. A lot are saying Wolves are a very different beast
Pretty much identical to my current draft. So I like it! 😉
I’m tempted to drop Robertson to Lovren to enable Ederson in the sticks.
If Hudson-Odoi keeps a spot (unlikely I know) then I’m even tempted to drop Pedro to a 4.5 mid (Stephens?) and then squeeze Auba in for Firmino.
I think if Lovren was fit to start the season I would have him in. Yeah I’m not sure whether to play it safe with Gudmonson or go with Hudson. Guess if Hudson starts playing value will go up. It’s kind of is Hudson a better option off the bench than a 2 pointer.
Morning all,
How’s everyone now the majority of the final pres-season games are done? Will be watching the CS with much interest…Mendy, Sane, (KDB make bench?), Hudson-O, Pedro, Fab.
Thanks to whoever is looking after the Pre-season link – amazing and invaluable. However, Christian bloody Benteke has caused me probs. Did have Sorloth as a cheeky playing (I thought) £5m playing 3rd striker. I have a mate who is season ticket holder and watched a few pre-season games and said he looked very lively, as he did end of last season. BUT it looked like a GW1 XI that Woy put out yesterday.
Now then, anyone think of a playing 3rd striker for 5.5 or less? I plan to play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 but whereas I’m not too bothered by a non-playing 4m def or 4.5m mid warming his behind on my bench but I don’t like the idea of a non-playing forward. Will be benched, but to know I’ll have a 2 point man with an occasional assist or goal (if needed) gives a bit of comfort.
Any thoughts?
P.s. More and more rumours of Maguire to Utd as Mina deal in jeopardy and Spurs holding out on Alderweireld.
Jimenez looking to start at Wolves. Look out for Ings potentially moving clubs. Other option is Reid at Cardiff. Not loads of options in that bracket.
Not sure what’s happening with Mina where is he going to go. Looks like United will sign a CB Alderweireld is favourite this morning
Cheers Smash,
Having the transfer window close early helps us, but it could be a frantic last day!
I’ve currently got Jota so Jimenez isn’t appealing, though I could move Jota to Richarlison so I’ll look at Jimenez – thanks. There’s always Andy Carroll
Yeah really will be a bit nuts. If you continue with the 5.5 option I’d go with Jimenez and swap Jota to Richarlson but yeah it’s difficult.
Big Andy in classic style got injured climbing through a window trying to sneak back in after Curfue well that’s the rumour anyway
Seems like Toby is almost done to Utd. I’m not convinced they were ever in for Maguire.
KdB is not part of City’s squad today.
Yeah they probably used Maguire as a smokescreen to Panic Spurs a bit.
Which of these is better?
1) Ralls/Neves/Wilshere & Auba
2) Richarlison/Jota & Firmino
I have Salah and no Arsenal, if that’s makes a difference.
2 for me
I prefer Richarlson to Jota
Ralls over Neves and Wiltshire
Cheers Smash. That’s kinda what I’m thinking at the mo, but looking st options to squeeze Auba in.
Could do Ederson to Patricio and a 5.0 defender to a 4.5 defender, but not sure that’s worth it either?
Let’s pray Hudson-Odoi is this seasons Mahrez!
Yeah let’s hope so he does look the real deal but very young
2 for me Banjo
2 for me!
Cheers guys. Always nice when it’s undisputed!
Zed, how do you fancy your chances this season? Seems a lot of the promoted teams are investing a lot.
ps another Pompey fan here I’m afraid 😉
Doesn’t look good to be honest, lost 3-0 to M’Gladbach, leaked 2 goals against Celta Vigo, all goals pretty much came from defensive errors, so the defense looks dodgy at the moment… The attack should be better than last season and Armstrong/Elyounoussi seem like good signings but obviously only time will tell… MP was just horrendous last season, played way too safe, boring sideways passes was all he allowed lol… At the moment seems like our only hope is winning 3-2 rather than 1-0… At least it could be more entertaining than last season, although I don’t rate Hughes at all! Will most likely be another dreadful season, after all all the good seasons we had were when we had a solid defense and got many cleanies!
I do like Pompey, have nothing against them as I’m from Finland, when I first started rooting for Saints I had no clue I was supposed to dislike Pompey because of that
Haha yes, it’s certainly rare to find someone who will cheer on both sides!
I can see it being a long season for you too. Just can’t see where the improvements are – and you were pretty lucky last year! Wolves and Fulham have made some great additions. I think you’ll just need to hope the likes of Cardiff and Huddersfield are worse.
Ive got a few quid on the south coast derby being a league game again next year 😉
Haha, hope your bet fails miserably! :woot:
I’d love for it to happen in two years though, it’s not impossible to gain back-to-back promotion from League 1 to the Prem in two years, you know who did it 😉
