Site Team Gameweek 1

Hello and welcome to Site Team Gameweek 1. Seeing as FPL opened about 4 months ago, you would think we would have spent hours formulating our plans for the team, endlessly researching the stats and pre-season appearances of the players and balancing our budget to accommodate the must haves and the dark horses.

No. We all forgot about it until the Taskmaster that is Mito, clipped us round the ear and made us do stuff. Well, even then it was just to say if we liked ‘his’ team that he had created for us.

( …and even still we have our suspicions that The Legend played Twitter roulette and copied the first template he found).

But guess what? We all, in the main, loved the draft. A little tweak here and there to justify our enormous salaries but by and large we felt great and FPL could start in five minutes time if it liked.

Then Watkins came off injured.

Then Robertson did his ankle.

Then Toney had a knock.

Then Watkins was OK again.

And going to be playing in the middle!

It’s great to be back!

The Squad

OK so we know what you’re thinking and yes, we have taken the plunge on Tsimikas. His three assists and nice fixtures have us on the end of the line. We double him up with Trent and the obvious Mohamed Salah pick rounds off our maximum Liverpool exposure. Curiously Jota wasn’t given any thought so we must all be happy without him.

We don’t want to be faffing about with goalkeeper transfers at any stage (except maybe the wildcard(s)) so we’ll spend just £8.5mln and go all in on Watford with Bachmann and Foster offering an assured goalkeeper each week (don’t mention the ‘C’ word).

Joining the Liverpool lads in defence then are Luke Shaw, Luke Ayling and Ben White – who really should have been called Luke by his parents. We will likely use 3 defenders most weeks at the start and those will likely be our Liverpool two and Shaw but incase we don’t and/or we need a sub we are nicely covered.

Bruno is in and it shouldn’t take that much explaining and we have Raphinha and Harvey Barnes rounding off the spots in there. We usually always like the look of Leeds’ and Leicester’s attack and these two seem quite assured there and each for a favourable price as well. Burnley’s Josh Brownhill is the back up.

Our attackers are Danny Ings Ollie Watkins, Michail Antonio and Ivan Toney in what will now be known as the *drumroll*

‘AN-TONEY-KINS’

… we’ll work on that and come back to you …

There you have it. We have no plans to play early chips or wildcards and will see where the game takes us this season.

Captain

I don’t think this one needs any explaining, nor does the vice.

Hey guys, long time reader occasional poster. Been playing this game a while and honestly need a bit of spice thrown in. So I’ve decided this year I’ll be playing without any players from the top 6 teams, bar my beloved United. I’ve found myself the past few years just kinda going through the motions. ‘Oh who do I drop so I can bring in De Bruyne?’ ‘Salah or Mane?’ ‘Good god is Kane really worth all that?’
Anywho, I’m challenging myself to get around about midtable in my mini leagues. I believe I can pull off some surprises, and make a real go of this. So struggling a little with my first team (not helped by Grealish buggering off), and any advice or blatantly obvious oversights being pointed out would be much appreciated!

Hey Milo. This is an interesting challenge and I like it. Obviously you have a lot of money in the keepers but not many premium players in but what about using that money for Cresswell instead of Coufal.

Also I don’t like Zaha. Think he’s very dodgy but not much to improve on there mate. Maybe a Villa double up with Bailey as a punt? Or Trossard?

      • Cheers Matt! Yeah, plenty of money but feel the selection is actually quite limited. That is until some gems maybe start to surface throughout the season.
Cresswell is a good shout. And yes, Zaha I’m not sure of either, was considering Bailey or Buendia. What do you think of Digne and Castagne? Surprised at how little I’ve seen of them in other people’s drafts…

        • MattX says:

Yeah Sarr is someone I think could be a nice gem over Zaha to be honest. Or Buendia but not sure about this knock he has.

Digne I really like and I had him in my team until the United friendly as Everton shipped 4 goals, Digne wasn’t even taking all corners so I kind of put him on my wait and see list. As for Castagne I haven’t looked into him much but heard something about an injury that he should be back in time for GW1 for although will he go straight into the team, who knows. I would be interested by Bertrand but he has Castagne to rotate with. I think this team is solid though as you have a nice bench for cover if Castagne doesn’t play.

        • I didn’t think about Sarr, that’s an idea!
I think if both Castagne and Digne play they’re great attacking options, but yeah as you say it may be a wait and see, and there’s decent cover on the bench. Thanks for your input Matt, much appreciated!

Presuming you have 2 mil ITB, you could drop Sanchez to a 4.0 keeper, and just always play Emi. Of the 2.5 mil, use 2 mil to upgrade Zaha to Mahrez, and Coufal to Cresswell as others have said.

In a few weeks, when the injuries have subsided and new players have bedded in, you can shift Greenwood to a 6.5 like Buendia or whoever, and use the 1 mil to upgrade Mahrez to Sancho and Kelechi to DCL.

      • I can’t have Mahrez as he’s Man City, but I’ll definitely be keeping a keen eye on Sancho and DCL. Based on Kelechi’s form at the end of last season I probably prefer him at the moment. Good point about the keeper, cheers!

I think this may be my GW1 team. Thoughts appreciated. After a nights sleep I experienced some serious FOMO not having Bruno.

I wish i could catch Goal Machine and Sweet Blue Toffee. They are mucking up the H2H leagues they are supposed to be in. Theres also a lot of other people who want the codes but don’t get in the leagues.

Like it ….starting 11 is very close to my own draft except I’ve currently got Watkins/Barnes instead of Ings/Raph
Bench will be a problem pretty soon but sure you’re aware of that
