Double Game-Week 31 Comparison Sturridge vs Suarez

Double Game-Week 31 Comparison Suarez vs Sturridge

Sturridge vs Suarez

Luis Suarez or Daniel Sturridge is a debate that has taken a hold of the FPL world, in particular since Sturridge came back in GW21. The easiest thing in the world has been seeing the need to own both of them, the hardest thing has been choosing which one to captain. On a weekly basis we find ourselves rooting for our captain and rooting against the other half of S&S, despite them also being on our team. With the big Double Game-Week on the verge of commencing we find ourselves digging a bit deeper into the numbers and the possible consequences of choosing one over the other.

Sturridge vs Suarez

When Liverpool played Cardiff last time, Sturridge was out injured, so there is no real indication how Brendan Rodgers would choose to deploy his English International. While in the game versus Cardiff earlier in the season he played a 4-3-3 with Suarez as the centre forward, it does not mean he would use the same formation in spite of their 3-1 win. However if he did, one would assume that it would mean Sturridge as centre forward and Suarez playing on one of the wings. Rodgers has been notorious for deploying different formations and just because his diamond mid has worked the last two games, it does not mean he will repeat it. He had 3 wins on the run including the devastating 5-1 demolishing of Arsenal, before he changed to his current diamond mid (4-1-2-1-2). One can deduce that Rodgers treats games individually and adjusts his formation as he sees fit.

When Liverpool played Sunderland last time (GW6) they lined up in a 3-4-1-2 and S&S both had a massive day, it was the first game back for Suarez. So it would appear that a formation with 2 up top could work, but realize that Sunderland had just sacked Di Canio right before this game and Kevin Ball (caretaker) was making his debut in that game. So Rodgers probably had no real sense of what the Black Cats would try and do versus them. Now that Rodgers has seen Gus Poyet at work, I am sure he will deploy the tactics he deems fit and it could be anyone of his eight or nine different formations. But perhaps all an FPL manager should be concerned with is whether he will play 2 up top or Suarez on the wing.

When Suarez was out wide for Game-Weeks 23-27 (in purple) he averaged 5.4 PPG, Sturridge averaged 11.4 PPG. A difference of six points in a DGW would be huge, as it means there could possibly be a 12 point gap between captain choices. When both were played up top Suarez averaged 10.6 PPG and Sturridge averaged 6.4 PPG. A slightly smaller gap, nevertheless an 8 point difference over two games could prove very useful. Perhaps the capacity for large hauls more consistently appeals to you. Suarez with 8 double figure games compared to 4 for his strike partner (when playing together) is the clear winner there. Fact is just about every stat, points to Suarez over Sturridge. The more you look the harder the case becomes for Sturridge as captain. One could say that a higher percentage of his shots are in the box and on target, but I prefer the guy who takes more shots and that is without doubt the Uruguayan. Despite the stats and all the info that favours Suarez, in the end the winner of this game week captaincy battle could simply come down to how Rodgers decides to line them up. I guess it could be worse; we could all be putting ourselves at the mercy of David Moyes.

Morning all! And thanks for the article Mito! Still very unsure wether to go for Sturr or Suarez.
My #1 league opponent will captain Suarez. Our teams are very alike, but he is currently 33 points ahead of me.
Not sure if it’s worth punting on Sturridge or if I should wait till a latter stage of the season before I differentiate my captain picks?

Ive read some articles where BR speaks very warmly about the diamond formation. So I expect him to play 4-1-2-1-2 at least one of the fixtures.

      • Anything is possible with BR when it comes to formations. I would expect to stick with the diamond also, but after the destruction of Arsenal and 3 wins on the run I would have thought he would have stuck with Suarez out wide.

        • RITZ says:

Good point Mito. Think I’ll just stick with Suarez this time as I have a feeling he will outscore Sturr. Thanks again mate

Lol @ Innit. Answered Dreamers yesterday. That about petty leagues was a joke. No that isn’t true, everybody is welcome and there are no outsides. I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >.<

Hmmm. Really need to watch what I say. People take me way too seriously at times. *sighs*

On that note, good luck this GW bitches.

Ok. My internet communications skills suck. I meant to say sorry for yesterday. Like always I was just taking a piss and I think you interpreted it the wrong way. I don’t think in terms of ”petty leagues” because well I’m part of those same leagues, lol. Would be an indirect diss to myself. Which I like to do but in this case it was me taking a piss. Waking up some zombies. laugh

I like you and everybody else here Innit (that even includes B). I love and have great respect you guys take the time to write articles and share your vision on the game. They help a lot.

It just struck me I’m writing this but you’re not here. See? Communication works if both party’s are there. Another reason why I suck. Anyway, hope you understand and get my point. Peace.

Great article, made the captains choice slightly easier. Just logged on, my team as it stands at the moment, but I have 2 free transfers and am planning on making chnages for the upcoming weeks.

    Mannone ( Marshall)
Azpi, ward, shaw, Collins ( vlaar)
    Nasri, mata, oscar (bacuna, noone)
    Suarez(C), stur, Rooney

Planning on getting in some more city and Sunderland coverage, potential a defender from hull aswell
Any thoughts/ opinions on the team are much appreciated, closest I’ve been to my rival all season
    Cheers 😛

      Raziel says:

How about Everton coverage? They have 2 DGW’s. Hull has 1 and a blank GW in GW34. City has 3 DGW’s, taking a hit for a City player will probably be money for value.

      • duthers says:

        Raziel

Good shout on Everton. Currently looking at taking mata out for silva, unsure where to go after that :/ the position I’d want Everton players from (defence) is very expensive…

        • Raziel says:

Hmmm, Distin is the cheapest option at 5.3m I think?

I myself went for Coleman, could’ve gone for Baines. I do think you need at least 1 Everton defender, like 40 percent has Coleman and 20 percent has Baines, go figure. 😉

        • duthers says:

          Raziel

Thinking silva >> mata, then vlaar out for a hull defender, freeing up cash to do Distin>> shaw. That leaves me with a 8 point hit… Do I go ahead with that? Also VERY unsure on oscar, seems as if he hasn’t done anything in ages… But surely a 12 point hit would be, a bit far fetched

        • TheDreamers says:

Raz – I don’t think everton have been cs gold of late though

        • Raziel says:

Hmmm. Duthers, look at what dreamers said. They haven’t been CS gold. I have Coleman but he’s also a goal threat whereas Distin doesn’t pick up many bps or goals/assists. Hmmm. Hard one. You need to think it over.

And you sure about the Hull defender? They have a blank gameweek in GW34.

        • duthers says:

          Raz and dreamers

Decided to opt against the Everton defender, can’t afford the attacking fullbacks…

In terms of the hull defender, it’s either a hull or villa defender ( vlaar)
Now I’m thinking silva in for mata, vlaar out for Chester, then oscar out for ….
          HELP

        • Raziel says:

          Oscar out for Gerrard? Toure?

        • Raziel says:

Don’t know what will happen with Mirallas, he’s been so f-ing selfish the last few games. But if he does play he could be gold. So that’s an option, would also free up cash for a better defender. Anyway mate, you’re a bit late with this all, lol.

        • Raziel says:

You have to decide for yourself now. I tried helping. Short time window. Pick your team now and do the transfers if you want. If you don’t it’s too late.

        • Raziel says:

Aaah yes, Nolan beter option that Mirallas. Sorry.

@Duthers, Sunderland have a terrible schedule going forward even with the extra games it be hard to invest too much in them. Everton has two doubles and Fulham next GW, so I would look to figure out a way to get some of their defenders in there. Perhaps a Shaw to Distin could work, I know it is not exciting but it helps with your money concerns. Oscar to anyone else would help. 😉 Roon doesn’t play in GW34 so that could be a way to get some money in the bank to bring in players for the double or a way for Kun to come in. He is scheduled to commence training at the end of the week.

      • duthers says:

        Mito

At the moment, I’m thinking silva in for mata, then vlaar out for a hull defender( same price ) that leaves me with taking a hit, taking out shaw for an Distin, or oscar to anyone quite frankly…

    Mitro says:

    Adrian
    Coleman Collins Figueroa
    Hazard silva YYT Gerrard
    Suarez (c) sturridge (vc) Rooney

    Subs Davis Gnabry azpillicueta olsson

    Am I good to go??

    Fish says:

Please RMT and help me out

    MIGS (speroni)
    ivanovic-MERTESACKER-COLEMAN (COLLINS, m.olsson)
    NOLAN-YAYA-hazard-JOHNSON (JANUZAJ)
    STURRIDGE-SUAREZ(C)-LUKAKU

Upper case means double GW. Lower case means single GW. I just don’t know who to start and captain. Right now, my capt is Suarez and my starting lineup is above. Januzaj and collins have a DGW but are not guaranteed starters (maybe januzaj is but i dunno). So please help me select a lineup and it would be much appreciated

      Raziel says:

I’d play Collins over Iva. That’s what I’m doing anyway, I have Azpi and Olsson on the bench (I think).

I’m not a Hazard fan but I think he’s a better choice than Januzaj. You never know though. It’s a weird game. RvP is out right? Wonder what role Jan will get and how they’re gonna play from now on.

Surely benching Hazard is never a good idea? Already feel bad about benching Cahill! Colback or Collins can’t bring more points than Hazard…or can they!!?!

    • 30.1
      TheDreamers says:

Kung – you expecting Collins to start? im not and even he did, Id start Hazard over him and definitely over Colback

    • 30.2
      Raziel says:

Anything can happen but I wouldn’t bet against Hazard, no. Don’t be surprised if Hazard just picks up 2 points today though. On that note, Arsenal missing all key players, would be a disgrace of Mourinho loses.

      • I know right! Well Mourinho will be missing Ramirez and Willian but still…..expecting Hazard to do good and if he gets only 2 oh well…nothing to really complain about. Colback and Collins are not guaranteed to bring in big points. Can’t wait for the footie to begiiiiiiiin!!! laugh
