World Cup 1st Group Phase Live Match Chat

Welcome to World Cup 1st Group Phase Live Match Chat. The long four year wait is over and so is the tinkering for the first set of matches. We hope that you are happy with the 15 players you ended up with, but even if you decided against playing the fantasy version we still encourage you to partake in the chat below. We are sure there will be plenty to discuss that doesn’t always involve whether you should get assist points for a shot that was blocked or your striker really did touch the ball a la Kane before it went in. Predictor games, brackets, bets on the golden boot are all welcomed here. And yeah, even old school footy chat for those that who are just watching the games for fun and just want to talk about the Joga Bonito.

So that you have them to hand, we will post a screenshot of the substitution rules, transfer allotment, wildcard, boosters and of course we will have times and dates for all matches in this, the first of three group phases/rounds/fixtures or whatever you want to call it.

    Zed Leppelin says:

This just begs the question of how on earth are Saudi Arabia in the World Cup?!?!?

      • Matt says:

Are you watching it on RTE, Kop? They’ve been described as kids on a park running around after the ball.

      • Zed Leppelin says:

I bet there’s been some match fixing in the qualifiers…

        • Nah nothing like that. They did only qualify automatically on goal difference.

They are weak – struggling here to deal with the power and intensity of a ban average Russian team and you would fear for them against the other two sides in this section.

Salah could be the most transferred in player after this week as you would fancy a few across his next two matches if he shows fit enough tomorrow.

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

ZL, unfortunately everything is based on fixing nowadays mate. Just think about where is the next WC 😉

        • Zed Leppelin says:

GP – Well it’s FIFA, one of the most corrupted organizations in the world, who have a lot of power, SA have a lot of money and they even paid for some Spanish teams to accept their players to play in La Liga… Wouldn’t surprise me at all if there was some foul play (there’s no way of knowing, unless you wanna start risking your life by conducting some investigative journalism)

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

ZL, you better keep quiet before you get attacked by the PC brigade :big-lol:

        • Zed Leppelin says:

Ivan, I’ll be down at the cellar tonight, no worries, no cellphones or laptops allowed, no networks, no WiFi, no nothing, just bottles and sofa! 😉

        • If it was corrupt they surely wouldn’t have qualified only by goal difference?

I just think they aren’t very good but were better than Iraq and Thailand and Australia (marginally).

        • Zed Leppelin says:

You have a point there GP, I don’t know! Perhaps just a few games to help the cause, but you’re correct in that probably all the other Asian teams (apart from maybe Japan, and Korea) were even more bad!

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

You got it wrong ZL. PC doesn’t stand for personal computer 😆

        • Zed Leppelin says:

I meant I’m completely stealth down there, not even the secret service of Bulgaria could find me!! smile

        • Bry says:

I was gonna start a separate thread but this seems an appropriate place!

Something felt very wrong with that Russia v Saudi game. I can’t be the only person who thinks that. It was littered with half-hearted challenges (1st card was near the end), unforced concession of possession (how many times did it go out for a throw-in?), tokenistic goalkeeper dives…

Saudi are a bad team, but they’re not THAT bad, and they’re not 5 goals worse than an awful Russia team.

And all that posturing and acting from the Putin/Clown Prince of Bell-Air double-act in the VIP seats, too. Give me a break.

p.s. This is why I quit Twitter 😉
p.p.s. Yes, I’m aware this post was longer than most of my articles.

        • secretzorro says:

Bry, I’m a fellow cynic, Putin’s increasing Ru$$ki influence in the Muslim world imo. He has Syria as a puppet state now, who’s next?

        • Kralin says:

I don’t know enough about geopolitics to comment with any coherence about that.

However I have confidence that if the result was known before the game kicked off, Anfield Express (who incidentally leaked the opening set of 18/19 PL fixtures a week or so ago) would have told us the result beforehand. Their finger is on the pulse.

So you (and we) have nothing to fear.

The giggle-factor / conspiracy factor will go through the roof though if that score is repeated in Tuesday’s Egypt game.

        • Smash10 says:

          I completely agree with Bry

        • Smash10 says:

I completely agree with Bry. On top of that it was the last day of Ramadan Saudi Arabia really did not need to play first

        • DMC says:

It’s all fair as long as they don’t take Golovin’s points back!

        • DMC says:

Hi Cookie – you know me, I always think/believe we are going to win. To be as unbiased as I can though I’ll tell you that before the lopetagate I thought a 0-0 could be on the cards but after it I do think we win, if we manage to score. I don’t think they’ll score against us. On the fantasy front, rooting for Bernardo!

          What’s your prediction for tonight?

      Pancho says:

I just pulled up the chat here to say the same thing Zed! Makes Mo Salah look that much more appealing, as well as getting some Uruguay assets…

    • 13.3
      Smash10 says:

      They are shocking every time

    Matt says:

Another assist for Golovin! I brought him in last minute and I’m delighted it did haha. I actually like the Russians now.

  3. 15
    IvanTheTerrible says:

So, round two transfer window is now open but you can’t see other teams in your mini league :what:

      inittowinit says:

From memory of this, and from the CL, I think they update that a good few hours after the last game. I hope that’s the case anyway and that they aren’t planning on doing it round by round.

    MidnightJonah says:

Well done Russia, host fans needed that win…..

      IvanTheTerrible says:

It could be the year for the underdogs Midi 😉

      • MidnightJonah says:

Ivan Russia was not the team I was expecting today, I will be keeping a close eye on at least 3 of there players , not really tested yet but still smile

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

Well, I’ve said it many times but we are in for a big surprise this time. It’s not going to be Russia but someone least expected will do better than the favourites. Forget about all the bla, bra, bla, bra it’s not gonna happen 😆

        • Silvers says:

Ivan can’t see it going outside Brazil, Germany , Spain, Belgium maybe Uruguay as an outsider

        • DMC says:

          Perhaps the European Champions?

      • IvanTheTerrible says:

I don’t know Silvers. Have these feelings for months that will be a shocker. I don’t usually pay attention to those “top” pundits as all their predictions are so commercially and politically oriented.

    • 16.2
      Silvers says:

Hey guys Wasn’t expecting that at all from Russia but Saudi Where awful defending was shocking

  5. 17

Quit chuffed with that start. A goal and two assists from captain Golovin and an Akinfeev clean sheet. Might actually keep the armband on Golovin after that late goal!

    Kop Warrior says:

It’s a pity there isn’t another game on tonight!
