World Cup 3rd Group Phase Live Match Chat

Welcome to World Cup 3rd Group Phase Live Match Chat.
Forewarned is forearmed and all that….
We’ve posted this particular LMC a bit earlier than normal but that’s simply because of the points we are about to come onto really and their implications for your teams. This is where it starts to get a bit tricky as some teams have already qualified and others are still fighting tooth and nail to do so. Rest and rotation will occur naturally at this point for those who have but perhaps that may also depend on whether they are secure in 1st spot or wish to avoid a more tricky route by finishing there as opposed to 2nd. Either way it’s probably not the best round to be deploying that Bench Boost chip as getting 11 on the pitch may be hard enough, never mind 15!

For the record then here’s a quick reference guide to the situation in each group and who’s either ‘Qualified‘, have a ‘Squeaky bum time‘ ahead or are simply OUT! We won’t go into the exact scenarios in each group because quite simply they’re seemingly infinite and also mind numbing. All you need to know is whether they are through or not really. But even then it’s anybody’s guess as to what sort of team hits the field come kick off. It’ll be carnage, basically!

GROUP A

Russia – Qualified
Uruguay – Qualified
Egypt – OUT!
Saudi Arabia – OUT!

GROUP B

Spain – Squeaky bum time
Portugal – Squeaky bum time
Iran – Squeaky bum time
Morocco – OUT!

GROUP C

France – Qualified
Denmark – Squeaky bum time
Australia – Squeaky bum time
Peru – OUT!

GROUP D

Croatia – Qualified
Nigeria – Squeaky bum time
Iceland – Squeaky bum time
Argentina – Squeaky bum time

GROUP E

Brazil – Squeaky bum time
Switzerland – Squeaky bum time
Serbia – Squeaky bum time
Costa Rica – OUT!

GROUP F

Mexico – Squeaky bum time
Germany – Squeaky bum time
Sweden – Squeaky bum time
South Korea – Squeaky bum time

GROUP G

England – Qualified
Belgium – Qualified
Tunisia – OUT!
Panama – OUT!

GROUP H

Japan – Squeaky bum time
Senegal – Squeaky bum time
Colombia – Squeaky bum time
Poland – OUT!

You may need to be a touch more savvy with your planning in this round too as there are just 4 game days as opposed to the previous rounds being spread over 5 or 6 days. It means that the bench and captain switch options won’t be such a lose affair as they were previously. You can still plan out 4 viable captains and organise a decent enough bench of course. The fixtures themselves are as follows…

THE GAMES IN FULL

Monday June 25th
Saudi Arabia vs Egypt 3pm (Group A)
Uruguay vs Russia 3pm (Group A)

Zabaleta in the studio is right. All players have turned into drama queens. All these unnecessary falls, crying and pretending, thinking that VAR might help them

What happened this time mate? Had Spain on but it was on mute as I was putting the kids to bed.

      • Kop Warrior says:

Ronaldo was given a yellow card when the correct decision was either no action or a red card.

        • inittowinit says:

Ah ok, no wonder I missed it then! Which one should it have been?

        • Kop Warrior says:

I’d lean towards a red. However, my dislike of him could be clouding my decision!!

        • DMC says:

How can that be a ‘or’? No action can be that near of not being anything AND almost being the most serious fault as to be given a red. I think it’s the correct decision actualy. He was reckless and a bit lucky not to hit him outright. No action would be wrong; a red would be harsh. Correct call for me.

        • DMC says:

That call is however what led him to give the penalty to Iran, one of the most ridiculous calls in football. Ever.

        • Kop Warrior says:

DMC, if the ref felt he had used his elbow it should have been a red.

        • DMC says:

I’m not sure he did. You can see from his face and body movement that he wants to gain position and for that to happen he’d need to get his arm in front of the iranian bloke. The way he does it makes it seem he’s using his elbow which he his but not with the intention to hit him. The other guy almost died in that one and he barely touched him. Of course with the VAR looking at all this in slow motion all touches look like they are murder attempts when in fact they may not be.

The fact he’s my WC fantasy capo may or not be clouding my decision! smile

        • DMC says:

I’m never biased when it comes to Portugal, as you know, so I don’t even understand your comment!! smile
Seriously though, I’ll give you that once the VAR called him and he went to see it I thought he was gonna give him a red. There’s an elbow there (and you are right to say that he looked at the defender and acted) and that’s normally what then “need” to see to react accordingly – like in the second penalty (he just sees: “there’s a ball, there’s a hand -» penalty) but I honestly believe it would’ve have been harsh to red card someone in that situation. I can agree that Ronaldo may have been protected, given his status and that of the country. In other circunstances – like Rui Costa getting a second yellow when on his way to being subbed vs Germany ahead of USA94 qualification (which we missed as a result of that, for we were winning that game) – the referee would have sent him off. Not sure if I agreed with you in the end there bit that goes to show how unbiased I am!!

Happens every World Cup ‘cos refs come from piss pot leagues and just don’t have the experience. Last Euros we hardly mentioned the refs…
