Captain Picks Gameweek 12

Captain’s Picks

Welcome to our weekly Captain’s Picks article. Every week we will look to elucidate potential captains for the forthcoming game-week and give you our opinions on the merits of each, but then also delve a little deeper by analysing their recent stats to help make that crucial decision a little easier for you. Our Captain’s Picks for this week are as follows:

SuarezLuis Suarez is in fine form since returning from his 10 match ban; he has scored 5 goals and assisted his teammates for 3 in the last 4 game-weeks. He faces a tough challenge away to an Everton side that have conceded just 1 goal in their last 4 games, but will they be able to keep the in-form Uruguayan quiet?

Although there was no contribution by Sergio Aguero in GW11, he has still managed to net a respectable 4 times and assist 3 these past 4 game-weeks. Tottenham Hotspur travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City and Aguero will be looking to follow up his form with another impressive display. Tottenham have one of the best defensive records in the Barclays Premier League this term, second only to Southampton, conceding just 6 and 5 respectively.

Loic Remy has impressed of late, although scoring just 2 goals in the past 4 game-weeks, he scored 5 more in the previous 3 so he’s certainly comfortable scoring this term. In GW12 he faces Norwich City at home, a team that has the second worst defensive record in the league with 21 goals against, joint with Crystal Palace and second only to Sunderland who have conceded 22.

RooneyWayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have been the main men for Manchester United this season and arguably the only reason that United have managed to climb the table after a bleak start under the new management of David Moyes. Rooney has 2 goals and 4 assists in the last 4, alongside van Persie who has managed a goal in each of the last 4 and 2 assists. With a victory over league leaders Arsenal fresh under their belts Manchester United will be looking to kick on, and with a favourable fixture against Cardiff City, the aforementioned are both potential captain material for GW12.

Goals and assists

table-001

We will now analyse the statistics behind the recent performances of our 5 picks from the previous 4 matches in the Barclays Premier League, looking at the key attacking potential they hold, the threat they pose in front of goal, and finally their involvement and creativity for each of their respective teams. Statistics from the past 4 game-weeks will be used to keep player form and statistical data current.

Key attacking statistics

  • Suarez is presented with a chance every 14 minutes, under half the time of Rooney yet only slightly better than Aguero.
  •  27 – the most attempts at goal of our 5 picks come from Suarez, double that of Rooney but closely followed again by Aguero on 25.
  • 90% of Aguero’s attempts have come from within the box.
  • Both Suarez and Aguero have had 11 shots on target, more than the other 3.

Goal threat

  • Suarez and Aguero see a lot more of the ball around goal, with roughly double the touches in the penalty area than our other picks.
  • Rooney leads the group with a shot accuracy of 47%.
  • van Persie finishes 37% of his attempts at goal, just under double that of second best Suarez with 18%.

Involvement and creativity

  • Suarez has created 33% more chances for his teammates than Aguero, and roughly 66% more than the remaining 3 picks.
  • Creating a chance every 25 minutes is the best from the 5 by Suarez.
  • Suarez has also received the most passes in the final third of the pitch, whilst distributing the most successful passes in the same area.
  • Of the 5 Remy sees least of the ball in the final third of the pitch.
  • van Persie is involved in 75% of Manchester United’s goals, although creating joint fewest chances alongside Remy (5).

Summary

Luis Suarez is the stand out performer of the 5, with a chance every 14 minutes and creating a chance every 25 he’s performing at the top of his game.

Although fewer chances come the way of van Persie, he is far more clinical than the Uruguayan with a 36% conversion rate.

Manchester City FC v Real Madrid CF - UEFA Champions LeagueSergio Aguero cannot be overlooked; with 90% of his attempts on goal coming from within the area he can easily net a number of goals in any game.

Even with a good goal scoring record Loic Remy seems the weakest choice of the 5, but with a better conversion rate (18%) to Aguero and Rooney (15%) it proves that no matter how many chances you have, you need to take them for it to count in terms of fantasy football.

Wayne Rooney has the best accuracy with his attempts (46%) but with a conversion rate of just 15% and minimal touches in the penalty area, it seems he is taking his attempts from distance.

Worthy mentions that should be considered although not being included in this article include: Rickie Lambert, Eden Hazard, Aaron Ramsey, Steven Gerrard and Adam Lallana.

Following our analysis of our 5 Captain’s Picks for GW12 we would love to hear your views below on which you are going for and why. Will it be any of our 5 or someone different? Don’t forget to cast your vote on our Captain’s Poll below.

Really hope Tekkers starts showing form again soon, I liked it when you could get top performing strikers for 9 mil

      Demsie says:

What instead of the 7.8mil You can get then for now ? 😉

      • Titleastic says:

Haha fair point! Dunno what I’m moaning about actually seeing how Remy is top of the short list for this weeks transfer. Is he top top top draw though, or just top draw?

        • Demsie says:

Well.. I think he’s just top drawer in my opinion and in very good form.

But you don’t need a team full of top top drawer worldies to do well in this game.. You just need to buy the players in form (Suarez) at the right times (???) and at the right price (Ramsey) .. That’s the key to this game imo.

I’m just not very good at it ! 😉

        • Titleastic says:

Yep I am starting smarting from lack if Ramsey – and who do I currently have in that price bracket? … Nolan… and Sigurdsson…. My head is duly hung in shame

TBF we’ve been unlucky not to get a return from him the last couple of games. (I have him too) He’s hit the bar and had a couple of good opportunities the last couple of GW’s, I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t getting chances at all. Beware West Brom and the Mcauley fan club.

      • Titleastic says:

Actually I haven’t got him – but am ready to get him in as soon as the flood gates look like opening. Nice grav by the way

    Here’s Joey Barton’s England XI for the WC;

Hart, Walker, Jones, Cahill, Shaw, Wilshere, Ward-Prowse, Townsend, Welbeck, Rooney, Sturridge

    Raziel says:

Wow. Netherlands B-team did very well against Colombia with just 10 men (without Robben, Sneijder, RvP, Stekelenburg/Krul/Vorm, Martens Indi, Nigel de Jong and so on).

Most dirty friendly game I’ve seen in my life though. Dutch need to learn from these South American players and this game. Good job though. 0-0 and Falcao was nowhere to been seen and he played against a debutant Veltman. Veltman has such good instincts, he will be on the same level as Frank de Boer/Jaap Stam in a few years.

      Mutley says:

It cant have been that dirty, you said DeJong wasn’t playing

      • Raziel says:

Hmmm, People just remind the worldcup final. Overall de Jong isn’t even all that bad. Made like 3 terrible mistakes in his career though. 1 in Germany at HSV, 1 in England against Ben Arfa and 1 in the WC final.

The WC final was sort of bad but nothing compared to the friendly match I saw tonight. Peoples perceptions can be messed up. Anyway, didn’t like the way we played that tournament. Much more disgusted by Spanish (Barca/Real) theatre though. Rather have old hard German/Italian style than all that moaning/schwalbes and ganging on the ref begging for a yellow.

But whatever Mutley. Talk to the hand. 😉

        • Mutley says:

A bite, one cast and a bite lol

I didnt see that game tonight so i cant comment, but it was such an easy target.

As for your second paragraph, i couldnt agree more!!!

        • Raziel says:

This is what started most of the shit. Colombian number 7 was already very frustrated just before that (also after that). Got a Dutch player send out. Lens deserved to go but what that Colombian did in a friendly, so bad. We will see much more of this kind of trickery from South American teams next summer, beware 😛

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BcaN3NvmjQ

        • Mutley says:

So what did the Columbian do, Lens went straight through him!!

        • Raziel says:

FFS Mutley. You know ENglish si not my language. Look at what the Col did when both players were on the ground. His leg goes up and down. Like he wanted to split the leg of Lens in half. Only reason why that didn’t happen is because football players wear protection there. Again English not my language so I don’t know the f-ing word for that protection. Lower leg condom I’ll call it. laugh

        • Mutley says:

          You mean Shin Pad.

But the guys gone right through him, you cant have a go at the Columbian, Lens was just as bad if not worse

        • Raziel says:

Ok from both things. Which one would you have rather. Someone pushing you away or someone trying to split your leg in half? When play is over, no ball there, so no need whatsoever. Was a friendly even. One is a response and one was a bad provocation that could’ve badly injured any player. I’d go with the silly response if I had to. He needs more selfcontrol but deliberately trying to injure a player with the ball away in a friendly match………..that’s just scum like behavior imo.

        • Mutley says:

But Lens’s original challenge was horrendous!!!

        • Raziel says:

Anyway, it’s ok. I’ll calm down. Just annoyes me the Dutch are always so stupid. In big tournaments they lose to the likes of Portugal because shite like that. 5 red cards. They can’t play that game always when the respond they lose themselves. And this was in a friendly………………… LEARNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Share braincells, do whatever.

Anyway, off for bed. Take care all. And calm down. Relax and behave. Oyasumi Nasai Bitches.

      Raziel says:

On that note. From these 4 outsiders that played eachother: Japan, Colombia, Netherlands and Belgium. I was amazed most by Japan, such fieldplay, so fast. The beat Holland at their own game in the second half, far superior. I think only Spain and Germany can do it that same way. Holland was missing keyplayers, but still. Japan is really good and you don’t want them in your group.

Belgians were very poor. Everybody sees them as dark horse but after the Colombia and Japan beating they’re no dark horse for me anymore. Kind of funny they’re groupleaders next WC. Holland will have it hard against Belgium just because they always player harder/better against us. However if England wants to play against a groupleader it should be something like Belgium.

On that note, saw some stats. England 0 shots on target, Germany 7 (after 60 somewhat minutes). Don’t think England will be contenders anytime soon. 😉

      • flingy says:

Japan have been a good team for a number of years. I’ve watched them a few times and been impressed.

        • Raziel says:

Very impressed. ALso seen so much class from Kagawa these last 2 games that it amazes me Moyes doesn’t give him a proper chance. He is pure class. In combo with Honda deadly even.

      A certain B. Moore springs to mind…
