MLS GW7 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer Welcome to MLS GW7 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer.THIS WEEKS DEADLINE IS 00:00am UK TIME Saturday. (That’s Friday night, basically!) Just as a continuation on the intro from my FPL Fixtures article earlier in the week: I am still drinking kale shakes with ground ginger root. My wife is serious about getting my blood pressure down and getting me to cut weight, yet she has no regard for my personal joy nor happiness. But I’m smarter than my wife gives me credit for. Since I don’t want to have kale shakes and celery forced upon me at all hours, I’ve taken the bold step into daily intermittent fasting. Basically I eat no food and consume no calories for 18-20 hours per day. Ha! I’ll show her… Basically I hate everything right now. You, ano...[Read More]
MLS GW6 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer Welcome to MLS GW6 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer.THIS WEEKS DEADLINE IS 3:30am UK TIME (Saturday early, early, really early morning, basically!) Before this round has even kicked off, we’ve already had a heaping dose of MLS-y business going on in the world. First off, the people of St. Louis have rejected a bid to fund a stadium for a new MLS franchise in their city, and that’s kind of a big deal. In a sports league that doesn’t have promotion nor relegation, entering the league is usually as simple as giving the league as much money as one can muster, and giving the promise of a free stadium. But the people of St. Louis decided they didn’t want to give the league any money so that one day they could try to buy their own aging European superstar,...[Read More]
MLS GW5 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer THIS WEEKS DEADLINE IS SATURDAY 1st APRIL AT 00:30AM UK TIME (Friday night, basically!) Imagine this: you’re sitting at your job, and you start to feel a bit overwhelmed. Maybe you start to think that this whole theory of “fake it ‘til you make it” might not work out. You try to put on a brave face, but there’s always a part of you that feels a bit underqualified to be doing what they pay you to do. After all, the ultimate consequence for being found out as a bit of a fraud is that your employer will fire you and you’ll have to tell the wife and kids that ramen and canned tuna fish are going to on the menu for a while. Now you have two options here: you either a) continue to stick it out and hope for the best, or you b) apply to be a scheduler in th...[Read More]
MLS GW4 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer THIS WEEKS DEADLINE IS SATURDAY 25th MARCH AT 6pm UK TIME This shouldn’t be a long article. As a matter of fact, this shouldn’t be an article at all. You see, the MLS just can’t help itself. There is a fundamental problem within the hierarchy of the MLS that refuses to conform to certain norms within the footballing world. And it’s because of statements like this that will ensure I’ll be writing for you all here for years to come instead of ever getting a chance to write a fluff piece on the MLS site. The major football leagues are on a break this weekend to allow for international duty. England has taken the weekend off. I imagine Germany, Scotland, Spain and the rest followed suit. Even Mexico took a little break. But the MLS? They just couldn’t d...[Read More]
MLS GW3 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer THIS WEEKS DEADLINE IS SATURDAY 18th MARCH AT 6pm UK TIME GW2 was the round when the scores actually started to ‘count’. Well, unless you were in H2H leagues – because those scores stayed in place from the first round. But the classic scoring reset itself. Listen folks, this is the MLS. If you’re participating and you’re active in the league and the game, you just have to accept that some things are going to be a bit off. There’s no other way around it. All in all though, GW2 was a fun week to watch. Even though the league says there’s no way that they could do a winter schedule like everybody else in the world, we had a snow game in Minnesota that was so unique and had so much scoring that the league couldn’t stop gushing about how great it w...[Read More]
MLS GW2 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer THIS WEEKS DEADLINE IS SATURDAY 11th MARCH AT 7pm UK TIME Well, depending on your point of view, the Opening Week Challenge was either a complete success – or a complete failure. In one sense, having a one-off challenge where just one person wins is a bit of a letdown; to win the prize felt more like hoping for your lottery ticket to win than anything else. But at the same time, with the inclusion of two new teams into the league and a slew of new players to look at on already established squads, it was actually kind of nice to see players in action before scores started counting against us. So your feelings on GW1 will largely depend on whether you’re a glass half-full or half-empty type of person. All of that being said, one thing that is un...[Read More]
MLS GW1 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer I said I wasn’t going to do this again – and a part of me still reserves the right not to do this. But at the end of the day, I’m a fantasy junkie, so what else would I be doing with my time? The thing with the MLS is this: it’s got a lot of problems. The schedule is different; it’s overly congested at times, and it cares not for international play. The teams aren’t subject to relegation; as a direct result of this, you’ll see a lot more player rotation than in other leagues – why risk running a player into the ground to secure a vital point when you’ll still be in the league next year no matter the result? All of this led to a historically very difficult fantasy game to play and navigate, and I was pretty burned out last year with deali...[Read More]
MLS GW32 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer This is going to be a shorter MLS article than normal – because this is a much more limited schedule than normal. In fact, it’s safe to say that this round of FMLS action shouldn’t even exist at all. While the rest of the world is on a collective footballing break for international dates, the MLS has decided to schedule 4 matches with a pool of 6 teams. In the past, it seems like the MLS would run a ‘fuller’ schedule during FIFA dates, but people started getting pretty upset with that policy. So instead of just taking a proper break like other leagues, the MLS produced this…mess of a reduced schedule as an alternative. So undoubtedly, when you open up your team page for the first time this week, your team is going to look pretty broken....[Read More]
MLS GW29 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer You have to give FMLS credit for one thing: the game is constantly evolving. Even when it appears to stagnate in long stretches (Giovinco being dominant, Kljestan and BWP pairing), the game seemingly has the ability to change its meta selections at will. Not so long ago we were all about aforementioned Giovinco, Sjoberg and Valeri as main picks. Now the most key question is how we do we accommodate Giovani dos Santos and…Tim Howard?) This wouldn’t be a bad thing on its own – in fact it would be a phenomenal experience by itself; having the ability to see the new trends coming would certainly set managers apart – and if this were an FPL type of game it would be pretty great in that respect. But it’s definitely not an FPL type of ga...[Read More]
MLS GW31 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer I’m trying to find a polite way to describe how the last round of MLS action felt. It’s my nature to be…slightly off-color, and I’m trying to fix that. And here I am thinking, should I say that the last round was a real ‘punch in the gut’? Was it maybe a ‘bell ringer’ of a hit? And then I thought no, it was a kick to the junk. That’s all I got. That’s as polite as I can describe it. The game is infuriatingly erratic. Even your best research coupled with your best guesses can’t help you to see something like Seattle winning 4-2 in LA (and Lodeiro getting zero goals). Or how about NYRB only getting a single goal against Montreal…via a goal by Royer? Does somebody want to tell me who Royer is? I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know he was a pe...[Read More]
MLS GW30 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer GW29 went off as many thought it would – which is odd, because the MLS is rarely ever predictable. Seattle and Portland won at home. Colorado earned a clean sheet and yet couldn’t score a goal to save their lives. Bruce Arena pulled out a road draw while hiding a key ‘injury’ in his squad. Frank Lampard got hurt again. And Jozy Altidore rose above his skill level to keep Toronto atop the Eastern Conference. Oh yeah, Landon Donovan scored too. All in all it was a pretty pedestrian set of affairs this past week. Do we dare hope for more of the same this round? This is the last round before another difficult set of scheduling takes over, so maybe we’ll get lucky, right?
MLS GW26 Tips Fantasy Major League Soccer “…even if you do make the right moves, you could still be wrong.” — Guy Sanchez, GW25 MLS Tips article I called it folks. You knew it was coming, and I knew it was coming, and we still act surprised when this game completely punches you right in the face while throwing your plans out the window. In case you missed it, several of our big players in the league got rotated out during the midweek matches. Absent from starting lineups were Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris, Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard and Giovani dos Santos. Some subbed in late, but for the most part, several pieces of our teams that we were banking on to guide us through this landmine-infested stretch of bye weeks failed us. Not a lot you can do about it except dust yourself of...[Read More]
