Fantasy Premier League Set Piece Takers 2014-15

Tips Ok then so we saw quite a few requests for an updated ‘Set-Piece takers’ list on the comments recently and it jogged our memory that we hadn’t done one and as ever we took notice and decided to take action. We had a quick look around the offices of FF247 and found Eddy and Flingy slumped in the corner playing cards and a light bulb came on! So suddenly Eddy became our roving reporter and was whisked around the world to see all of the pre-season friendlies he could manage in order to bring you the latest set-piece table, while we locked Flingy in a darkened room, with Google as his only friend, to bring you the stats on last seasons set-piece specialists. Enjoy…

Please find below the FF247 Set Piece Takers List for 2014/15. This list is a guide that we hope will help you select players that have the potential to bring in goals and crucial assist points. The table is based on information gathered from last season’s games, Opta stats, pre-season friendlies and FF247 community input.

The article itself is archived under the tab at the top of the page entitled Tips/News and is linked under the drop down box ‘FPL SET-PIECE TAKERS 2014-15’ so you can refer back to it at any time, as are many of our other articles and helpful tools such as Fixture Tracker and Weekly Tips.

Please be aware that this list is subject to change due to player injuries, drop in form, suspensions, manager whims, etc. The list will be updated throughout the season and as ever we welcome anybody in our community to inform us if you are aware of any updated roles or indeed anything you think we have got wildly inaccurate! You’re not perfect and neither are we 😉

Players are listed in order of priority for each particular role –

So while Eddy was jet setting around the globe, Flingy was busy squirreling away to bring us the highlights of last season’s set-piece stats which are below for your perusal. The first deals with the players who had the ‘Most’ in each section. The second examines the teams themselves. We hope you find these both informative and helpful. There are obviously some players in there who are no longer with us (gone abroad, not died) and there are new players at some clubs who will take over some of these duties.

My dad just made his first ever FPL team. I laughed a little:

    Howard – Adrian
    Sagna – Lovren – Jones – Ivanovic – Ward
    Adams – Navas – Hazard – Barkley – Henderson
    Giroud – Dzeko – Lambert

Poor fella. I helped him out a little but he seemed happy enough! laugh

Markovic should start for Pool if he’s fit, but he has a “small tendon problem”, and has only played the one pre-season game. I’ve got my I on him for sure, and if he starts he’s a nice option. At this stage tho I’m playing it safe with Sterling.

Anyone approaching this season with a different strategy to normal?

I’ve promised myself not to chase TV this time. Last few seasons I’ve been making early transfers with one eye on the likely price changes. This time I’m waiting until at least after the press conferences. It’s taken a while for me to come round to this, but having lots of funds in FPL is perhaps the most commonly overrated thing IMO.

I’m going to try and concentrate only on players that are almost certain to start. i.e. Don’t over commit to having too many Man City, Chelsea etc players. Sounds obvious, but I intend to play a whole lot safer than I usually do.

Don’t stubbornly avoid the premium scorers ‘just to be different’. Although I take a perverse pride in the fact I had neither Yaya no Ramsey at any point last season, it probably didn’t help me.

Wildcard… meh, who am I kidding, I’ll probably still burn this in the first few gameweeks. 😉

Haha Bryan, this will be my 2nd full (and serious) season of playing FPL and yeah, my plan was to chase TV to an extent!

Not crazy chasing, but maybe the odd early-season hit, to both raise funds and capture players in their brief streaks of form! Which is something I often failed to do last season…

      Early wildcard for me too!

      • Hits! Now there’s a topic that could command it’s own article. (…and before you ask, Init, NO! 😉 )

That’s the one thing I still haven’t got my head round, in terms of optimal strategy. I’ve been avoiding hits like the plague in MLS, and I’ve still been losing ground on those that do. This could be because of the difference in how points are awarded in MLS though.

Mito often says ‘All hits are created equal’, but I’d love to see some analysis on this topic in the future. It’s the one area I feel really at odds with.

        • jamesimmo says:

I haven’t taken one hit in the MLS game. Wanted to keep it clean haha, but yeah, they never sit well with me.

It almost feels like cheating! I made 4 last season: one paid off exceptionally well, one worked in the long term and two face planted.

But, if it’s a reasonable decision, the gamble should certainly be considered. Always try to avoid them though… last season’s relentless barrage of injuries certainly didn’t help.

        • Raziel says:

Hmmm, if things really work out with my team I don’t think I will need the early wildcard. However, if things don’t go my way, change shall come. 😉

        • inittowinit says:

Thanks for volunteering there Bry, 5pm tomorrow ok for you I assume.

‘Hits and their impact on both FPL and MLS’. LOVE the idea mate, can’t wait to read it now actually 😉 ,thanks.

          Morning chicken!!
While ur discussing the topic of articles I have just emailed you an offering!! Please be gentle mate its my first one!! 😉

        • Just realised I misquoted Mito there. Sorry mate! “All hits aren’t created equal”, or something like that. And he’s completely right of course.

      RedVT says:

This is a great point Bryan. Last year I became overly concerned with price rises/drops and I let that drive some decisions that ended up hurting me points-wise. I noticed that many of the serious (and very good) FPL players rarely make transfers early in the week, and I definitely need to work on my discipline in this regard.

Last year my team value was over 110 million at the end, but my overall ranking was better the season before when I wasn’t so concerned with buying and selling players for profit. There’s probably a nice, happy medium in there someplace where you can build some value and also play it smart, so that’s what I’ll be trying for find this year!

      Bryan,

I hope you stick to your plan. I agree entirely with it, especially the early transferring of players – always opening yourself up to a bite on the behind.

I expect you to win this now. Don’t let me down please . . . .

      • Ha. Steady on there GP mate. I’m a notorious bad starter in all Fantasy Football disciplines. Last season in FPL, this season in MLS…. complete ‘mares. So I’ll need to address that.

My target it to simply beat my ranking last year, which was my personal best. Modest compared to many on here, but y’know….

        Top 10k would be lovely.

Alright Bryan! I have to disagree wuth you on this mate I always go for a high TV,aggressive transfers policy up to xmas last season (was about 300 000) it still has to be manged well but after that I barely saw a red arrow. In my main mini league I won by 8 points,me and my rival basically had the same team but with my higher TV it ended up being his Nolan and puncheon against my Gerrard and Eriksen!! It is a difficult balancing act with the hits but I love the chase! Btw my finishing rank was 5k! smile

MY TEAM. TO RATE OR NOT TO RATE????????????

      Raziel says:

Week 2 Remy will be replaced by Pelle (Southampton) and Janmaat will come off the bench and take van Aanholt’s spot.

      Raziel says:

Also, I want my fifth defender to be a playing one and not from WBA. I might go with Upson instead.

    • 114.3
      jamesimmo says:

      It’s pretty sexual.

I was considering a similar move (Tadic in for week 2 like you with Pelle) but, in some ways it’s quite wasteful, especially if an early squad injury crops up. Also, Liverpool aren’t too solid at the back (as preseason would also seemingly confirm) so Southampton might still do some damage.

      The B says:

Raz this is actually a great squad. Defence almost similar to mine.

Lack of Arsenal is again a bit scary, but maybe Remy>Austin can help you in upgrading one of the mids to Ramsey, who is on hot form in friendlies, again.

Austin is on penalties, as per the article, and he is in my squad because of this reason.
