Grab, Avoid or Bore Off!

Welcome to another edition of Grab, Avoid or Bore Off!! It is International Break time and you know what that means. Those 3 pistoleros are called in to save us from the empty feeling that no FPL for two weeks leaves us with. So I have gathered the boys and this time we have dived into our topics with somewhat of a plan. Yes!! There was a plan on a Bore Off article, if it’s possible to live in a world where Trump can win, we can have a plan for Bore Off. We broke it down by positions and slowly but surely, tried to answer some of the questions that most concern FPL managers. Whether we answered them in a way that is helpful is a different question. 😉 So without further ado let us get to it and see if we can provide a little help, some laughs and a couple of “what an idiot” moments. Let’s Roll!!

Nice one lads. That Shirtless Wenger one almost got unnoticed with so many insightful and serious questions. And answers. I take it that there’s some sort of unanimity on proceeding with 3-5-2, if posible, or at least consider it, which I agree with given the value for money in mids vs forwards. That also screams no KUN for me. Otherwise, the 5 men in midfield won’t be strong enough to justify such tactical change. Time will tell, as ever.

I still have no idea what that question referred to. I’m too scared to even google it.

Currently sat doing a formation analysis in conjunction with Pancho for an article later this week and it’s interesting what you say as 3-5-2 looks favourite so far (only half way through) but to have an ideal one probably means major compromises or an extended budget of about £120m. I guess the £40m midfield question above probably alluded to just that point also. i.e it’s a nice theory…

      • DMC says:

Very interested in such investigation init. And Pancho.
I’ve been going on a 3-5-2 without Kun since gw4 and it has worked well, not necessarily in terms of OR (128k) but in terms of how it compares with the 3-4-3 with Kun and Ibra that I had when I changed.
This was of course forced by Kun’s suspension and other pressing issues that made me use my WC for a wholesale change. Very different from simply ditching a healthy Sergio right now.
Anyway, as you say, it does mean a major compromise and it’s not just the Kun-less compromise, which is already a bold statement, it’s totally changing the chip, given that you need at least 4 mids on the 8.5-11.0 bracket whereas on a 3-4-3 you could probably live with just 2 of those and then 2 heavy hitters up front with a third budget-ish striker.
This Sanchez injury though makes it trickier because this does not work (not for me at least) without him – he’s the reason why I accepted, reluctantly, to go without Kun back then.
If I’m on a 3-5-2, at least 4 of those mids need to be either very explosive (mane) or very consistent (KDB) or both (Sanchez and Hazard). Firmino and Coutinho obviously come to place for they have also been consistent and explosive but if you have both you are totally exposing yourself to failure on a 3-5-2 if they have a bad week.
This is the reason why I don’t have nor will have 2 liverpool mids on 3-5-2. I would on a 3-4-3 because that tactic probably means better options up top which would compensate a bad weak from them.
In other words, heavy mids on a 3-5-2 don’t seem to bode too well with double on any team’s midfield (unless you want to rely on budget mid gundogan). Such tactic suggests a top gun from each team for at least one of them will likely explode per gw.
Thus the Sanchez, Hazard, KDB, Pool mid solution. That however is not possible with £40 and then enter the compromises upfront, which not everyone is keen on doing.
My forward line is humbly but proudly and honestly constituted by Mr. Bony and Mr. Austin. One of them will likely produce something each week which is enough if at least 2 out of the 5 mids produce +10 hauls each week which is also likely with those names.
Combined with the right capo choice and the odd cleanie in the back you are easily looking at 60 pts per week for a starter, which is not bad.
Has this been the case for me since gw4?
Well, I’m on 54 per week since then with 2 capo fails in the process and for a while there I actually didn’t own 4 top mids, but only 3 in 5.
If these last 5 weeks are to mean anything, though, then this is also backed by numbers given that in that period the current top 7 midfielders have all scored at least 2 +10 hauls (bar Sanchez actually, whom only got one). KDB is counted for his last 5 gw.
Not sure there’s a question here, just trying to contribute with something.

      • Pancho says:

Innit, I added up the overall dream team plus cheap enablers to fill out the bench and it came out to £118m :/
Will be interesting to see if there is an affordable 3-5-2 that has out scored the best affordable 3-4-3. #StillWorkToDo

        • DMC says:

Hi Pancho – It’s interesting that the dream team actualy runs on a 3-5-2.
I’ve ran some numbers and the dream teams with 4 bench enablers for 3-4-3 costs 111,9 and the one for 3-5-2 costs 109,5 if I’m seeing it correctly.
I’m sure the best affordable 3-5-2 scores more than the best affordable 3-4-3 for the simple fact that the later involves kun, leaving you surely with poor options on the other sectors than the 3-5-2 one.
Adding the bench players (which can’t really be just enablers of course) will not benefit 3-5-2 it seems given that there’s more value on a 5th cheap mid than on a 3rd cheap striker if that makes sense.
          Have fun though! smile

      ASXE FC says:

Here is a strong mf with kun in it …it’s just about how decisive are you about having those…and with only CFC keeping a cs last Gw…it’s not a bad idea to have weak Def..overall

      • DMC says:

ASXE – Can’t do this 3-5-2 with two 4.0 GK, 3 non-playing bench players and no premium defender, imo. And certainly not relying on Vokes as your second forward.

        • ASXE FC says:

In the nxt 3 weeks …there is no solid option from top6 team premium defenders which guarantee constant cs…and even with 5cs in a row for cfc..it’s very tough for them ahead…and yes my gk position is too weak..same goes for my bench…it’s the price to pay for having kun and kdb both…but obviously one will make way for funds in future to reinforce my Def issues…and Vokes is there to counter Evans..this gw…hoping one will either score or the later keeps cs.and Burnley have got good fixtures ahead to cement their position out of relegation zone…and if that happens vokes will get some goals..I hope so

        • @ASXE-I put a 3-5-2 hypothetical team lower down the page. Perhaps you can use it as a point of comparison.

Enjoyed that! I agree with the growing 3-5-2 consensus. Those with Aguero plus Costa and/or Lukaku won’t be able to treat themselves to an allstar midfield which is where the consistent points are. With players like Firmino and Sanchez playing as forwards, a 3-5-2 seems (at the least) almost like a 3-3-4 anyway.

    nishant says:

Costa felt some discomfort when he reported for international duty earlier this week.

The 28-year-old sat out the first session on Tuesday as a precaution, but there are more doubts surrounding his fitness after the striker did not take part with the rest of the group yesterday either.

Costa did a light session on his own instead, before going back inside the team’s base for some treatment.

Sources in Spain suggest he has a haematoma in his groin and Chelsea will hope he doesn’t aggravate it any further while away with Julen Lopetegui’s side.
