After getting a look of four gameweeks of action, we have asked our three forced volunteers to give us their opinions on some fpl related questions and of course as is tradition some non fpl related questions. For those of you only here for the Giroud :buba: related question just skip straight to the last question.

So without further ado, let us get to it!

    Always love reading a GABO!!

    Vinci says:

    Hi all,

apparently I am a man of poor convictions…

Last year, I firmly believed that WC should be held for cases where you really absolutely needed them. Heavy surgery, many important substitutions… As a result, I have used mine on the 30th of december to avoid loosing it, and did nothing substantial with it.
So this year, even though my team was faring relatively well, I have played my WC…

And second drastic change. Originally, I was totally sold on the “strong defense” philosophy when I built my team for GW1. I had Robbo, VVD, Zichenko and Walker-Peters in defense; and Vardy, King and greenwood in attack.
And now I want to completely shift things. Killing top 7 (well, at least 6), and cheapies in defense.

What are your thoughts on this WC team?

      Stone Frog says:

I would try and get someone like Otamendi at 5.4 or Digne at 6.1 if you can stretch to it. Just to give you something more in defence. Tricky though, may be Abraham to Barnes would generate a bit of cash.

      • Vinci says:

        Cheers, Stone Frog.
Yes, this team definitely is unbalanced. I keep going back and forth, putting a little money in the defence – and removing it!
Changing Abraham to Barnes only gives me 0.4. It would have to be Ayew, and that would make Digne possible.

I am still undecided, since I prefer Abraham (and Chelsea coverage) to Ayew…

    Zed Leppelin says:

Well surely nothing has changed in just 4 weeks that would suggest a complete opposite of strong defense, which is a weak defense that you have here… Could be digging your grave with that defense… The only players that you have in your attack that are not in my team, for example, are Kun and Abraham (I have Barnes and Ceballos) but I have a strong defense, so basically a lot depends on Kun, if he gets benched you’re effed smile

Plus I don’t think the strong defense has failed at all thus far!!! TAA has 22pts for instance, same as Mount who a lot are getting instead of a defender, TAA is just slightly more expensive and will no doubt outscore Mount for the season… Or take Digne who’s on 23pts, 1 more point that Mount but cheaper, just 1 shy off Silva who’s a lot more expensive (and who’s been given as an alternative to KDB a lot)! I still think a strong defense is the way to go and there hasn’t been anything in the numbers (the facts) so far that even suggested otherwise!!!

      Kralin says:

You’re not alone in the wilderness with those thoughts, Zed.

However people chasing the hot quartet – and I’m not talking of John Coltrane’s classic quartet, alas – have little choice but to do that (go fairly cheap on defence).

      • Zed Leppelin says:

Thought you were talking about Miles’ second great quintet to be fair, that’s the best there ever was in my (very subjective) opinion!

        • Kralin says:

No, I had quartets on my mind.

But yes, that second quintet produced music that I think still hasn’t quite been absorbed fully. One day I’ll get the entire Live at the Plugged Nickel set – one day.

I have a very soft spot for Nefertiti by that quintet.

        • Zed Leppelin says:

Yep, Nefertiti/Filles De Kilimanjaro/Miles In The Sky is a powerful stretch, throw in Sorcerer as well, some of the best music ever played!

    • 4.3

You make good points Zed and we have a WC article out this week on which I imagine your point will be well argued.

Personally I’ve got a couple of decent defenders and three quarters of the four up top with Mane instead of Salah. Sort of a half-way house compromise if you like.

      Stone Frog says:

Many like myself started with a ‘strong’ back four, but in reality some of them weren’t strong (e.g. Zouma, KWP). There are probably only really 5 strong defenders, 3 Liv, Digne and Laporte/Otamendi. As a result many have switched strategy.

      The Padster says:

Here is a prime example of what can and did go wrong, I’d planned my team from the start to get me to GW4 and probably WC then, but for some unknown reason (Beer) i decided to WC GW3 and get thee 4 in with a weaker defence, My new team managed just 1pt above average, whereas if I’d left alone i would have scored around 70pts, the plan is still to make Aguero back to an 11.0mil attacker and make one of my 4.5 defenders a 5.5, but i do miss them 11pts :dash: :laugh2:

      Vinci says:

You are making a strong point, Zed.

I guess that part of the equation is that I do not see good defenders at 5/5.5M. No team seems to have a solid defence guaranteeing clean sheets at that point. ManU, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea seems fragile; Liverpool surpringly as well (on TAA’s side). City looks more reliable but still only had one lean sheet.
So the good bets are really premium defenders with attack returns, Digne or TAA (maybe Robbo in the future?) – and that costs.

My point is that presently, there is no real middle ground between premium defenders and 4.5 defenders of Burnley or Aston Villa. Which makes the “all in for offense” all the more tempting…

      • Zed Leppelin says:

Yeah, it’s of course easy to pick the best performing defenders so far and compare them with the mids… Robertson has been disappointing for example, and I am not saying you need 4 6m+ defenders, but I think the likes of TAA/Digne offer the best value in the game still, and so at least 2 premium defs is a smart choice! I think you can have a strong attacking force coupled with Digne and TAA at least, I mean TAA has scored quite well thus far and that’s with only one cleanie so far! Having 4.5m defs across the board is too weak imo!
