New FPL Transfers Bournemouth Nathan Ake and Jermain Defoe

Hello and welcome to New FPL Transfers Bournemouth Nathan Ake and Jermain Defoe. Cookie gets United’s latest additions, of course Init takes Everton and Matt has cherry picked Arsenal & City. And what about Kop I hear you ask? Well due to Liverpool’s insistence on writing apology letters rather than acquiring new players I’ve chosen Bournemouth! Why? I’m wondering that myself and should I come up with a worthwhile answer I’ll be sure to let you know. Enough about me, what about Bournemouth. This will be their 3rd straight season in the top flight finishing 16th in 2015/16 and 9th last season. They’ll certainly hope to continue on such a trajectory. To date they’ve added three players to their squad, spending a club record £20m on Nathan Ake who featured on loan for them last season. Sticking with former loan players they’ve also brought Jermain Defoe back to the club while they’ve also invested in goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. For now we’ll concentrate on the FPL prospects of Ake & Defoe.

Nathan Ake
Defender
FPL Price: £5.0m

Nathan Ake, remember him? Of course you do. How could we forget him after everyone got their knickers in a twist when Chelsea recalled him from his loan at Bournemouth last season. He was going to be a cheap route into the Chelsea defence, however he only featured twice towards the end of the season! Given some of the hysteria surrounding Ake (in FPL circles!) last season I was surprised to note that he only made 10 league appearances (two of which were cameos) for Bournemouth last season, he did however score three times during that period. He also helped Bournemouth pick up three clean sheets in his time on the south coast last season. Bournemouth’s defence certainly wasn’t their strong suit last year, only four teams conceded more goals! They will be hoping that the arrival of Ake and Asmir Begovic will help solidify a porous defence.

So what of his FPL prospects? Last season’s defensive stats are unlikely to inspire confidence and their opening fixtures are certainly a mixed bag. Relatively easy games against West Brom, Watford and Brighton are offset against more difficult games versus Arsenal, City and Everton. Perhaps the key to owning Ake is to identify someone who rotates well with him. The arrival of Ake could see club captain Simon Francis consigned to a place on the bench which would mean that Bournemouth’s likely back four are all priced at £5.0m. With new signing Jermain Defoe and last season’s hero Josh King vying for spot kick duties left back Charlie Daniels is unlikely to take any but he could yet prove a more enticing option than Ake.

Jermain Defoe
Forward
FPL Price: £8.0m

Modern day footballers are oft described as prima donnas and more often than not there is an element of justification to this but Jermain Defoe is undoubtedly one of the good guys. The time he spent with Bradley Lowery before the youngster sadly passed away means I and many others now hold Defoe in a much different light. But what about Defoe the footballer? He’s a goal scorer, nothing more nothing less. In total he has scored 198 goals in 535 league appearances. This will in fact be his second stint at Bournemouth having scored 18 times in 29 league appearances during a loan spell on the south coast back in 2000-01 when Bournemouth were in the 2nd Division which is now known as League One. It was so much easier when we had the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th divisions! Many assumed his career was over when he moved to Toronto in 2014 but he was soon back in the Premier League with Sunderland where he scored 15 top flight goals in each of the last two seasons.

So what of his FPL prospects? I honestly can’t make up my mind! My initial reaction was that at £8.0m he’s too expensive to be played as your 3rd striker but having given it some thought I’m now not so sure. The general consensus when playing 3-4-3 is that our 3rd striker should be circa £6.0m – £7.0m (although I suspect that this consensus might very well change this season and the average 3rd striker could be priced at £10.m!) but these strikers more often than not are not overly reliable. Defoe on the other hand is reliable and could easily finish up with 15 goals again this season and if your 3rd striker is picking up 15 goals you’ll do ok. Should things go well for both Bournemouth and Defoe there’s possibly an argument to be made for making him your 2nd striker but this is not something worth considering at this early stage and with so many big hitters available up top this season it’s probably just a pipe dream. For now I certainly wouldn’t be concerned to see Defoe as a 3rd striker in a RMT!!

Second draft of season, after Firmino debate I just tried another one with same defenders and replacing firmino by Defoe and replaced Sane by Salah. Also think can downgrade Luiz to 4.5 defender and upgrade Ritchie to 7m mid though not much options in that range

Its as good as any Snookie!
I haven’t even posted a RMT yet as I’m just not sure who I want!

I think with any team there will be an element of ‘you can’t have ’em all’ and in your case the glaring lack of Man City stands out but then if you went back to Sane it would be ‘lack of pool’.
Firmino is still on my radar, what was your thinking there?
I like the Lanzini Pick, he’s someone I’m considering, McArthur could be a canny pick but Palace do have a lot of mids to accommodate so maybe keep an eye on pre-season and see who looks likely to get the nod!
Ritchie I’m little biased on but I’ll likely stay clear until I’ve seen how he performs in the top tier!
Rafa seems intent on a new keeper so you may have to ditch Elliot but I’ll keep people posted on that score and he’s an easy switch to Myhill.
David Luiz i’m guessing is just a cheap way into the Chelsea backline, I guess its a choice of Foster + Luiz vs Courtois + McCauley/Dawson, I might be inclined to go down the latter route due to goal threat but again it could swing either way!

Thanks Rosco, wow great analysis laugh
Hadn’t thought of any of that in such detail.

        – I had Firmino and Sane in first draft and liked it better also Cookie Smash Mito and all had debated on Firmino and I think I still will go for that draft. On firmino with the pace they will have up there with Mane and Salah on wings, Coutinho behind them and not to forget brazilian connection of Coutinho and Firmino so think he’s the cheaper way and will play as a striker so definetly I will be considering him

        – Tbh I just randomly got McArthur as 4.5 player but I remember him scoring some goals towards end of season for Palace, I would get any 4.5 enabler if you can suggest me laugh

        – I like Ritchie, good at Fk’s and crosses, on all set pieces and there is not much option in that range with Snody and Townsend only other options.

        – Damn right on Luiz, cheaper way into Chelsea defense adding he takes sweet Fk’s and good at corners too. Will see how Court+mc/daw suits

          Team with Firmino

        • Rosco77 says:

I think Firminos reclasifcation is obviously the cause of such debated, the reason I’m still considering him is that had he scored as a forward last season he would have still scored 158 points, the only forward who is cheaper and beat that score last season (taking Josh king out of the equation, who would have scored 153) is Defoe at 166 and 0.5 million cheaper.

You could argue that Pool have more favourable opening fixtures over Bournemouth and adding Salah into the supply chain could and probably will improve Firmino’s output. Thats my current thinking on him and why he’s still a possibility for my team!

I’m currently on Carroll, purely based on sign leaving which will likely solidify his spot and he’ll likely pick up some of the set piece responsibility. If McArthur looks to have nailed the spot then he’ll be in my team based on the fixtures or indeed RLC if he does likewise. The only reason I’m more reluctant on RLC is his relatively high ownership, if he doesn’t start there will likely be a firesafe which will see his price plummet and I’d rather avoid having to use my FT to address that problem!
Obviously I like Ritchie but i’m a little biased!! I’m holing of until i see how he plays, we’ve also signed two right wingers in Atsu and Murphy so I’m keen to see how Rafa deploys them and how it affects Ritchie.
Cant argue with the Luiz pick, i think had Alonso not had the kind of season he ad last year then he would be in a lot more squads already! Im still trying to accurate Alonso but its tricky at that hefty 7mil price point!!

        • Rosco77 says:

Actually looking at it makes me more drawn to the Firmino/Sane team. Mainly because of City’s fixtures and how Sane performed last season!

I do worry about rotation in City’s midfield but Sane must surely get some solid game time and is obviously cheaper than KDB who would be my first choice if money were no object!

        • Snookie Bear says:

I really don’t think RLC has chance to be starter, but Palace has too many mids let’s see how it goes. Also think Alonso has got competion now as new signing is good too but Alonso should be starter I think unless he loses form. For me 7m for a defender is way too much if Alonso starts taking penalties too I would gladly take him but not going for him though I had him from beginning last season.

Sane should definelty get game time maybe will be subbed but before Jesus he was the most impressive of them.

Suggestions on Ritchie? Any good picks in that range? I liked him in Bournemouth and set pieces is the only reason I am going for him, but you’re NC fan and telling me to avoid him as got me thinking as I didn’t watch them in championship

        • Rosco77 says:

I think for me I’m worried I’d be picking Ritchie with my Black and white tinted glasses on!

He was fantastic last season and has set piece responsibility so I would def not say avoid him but for me I would like to see how he transitions to the Prem, I think in that price bracket he’s as good as anyone. The only options at 6.0 that tempt me are Ince (but he carries the same issues as Ritchie in terms of stepping up) and Stanislas but he seemed to drift in and out of the team last season and I’m not sure how Defoe’s addition will play a part in his game time.

All in all I guess the next 3 weeks will be important with everyone keeping an eye on friendlies!! Cant wait for it to start but at the same time I’m happy to have another 3 weeks to ponder my selections!!

        • Just about everyone says Ritchie was disappointing at Bournemouth. In fantasy he was decent, still a top 30 mid despite the struggles. If he is able to burry 2-3 extra goals because of pens and in general just play a touch better maybe grabbing an extra assist or two, you are looking at about 25-30 extra points when you also account for bonus. If he does that which seems reasonable, he is on the edge of being a top 10 mid, for 6.0. Sounds like he good be real good value to me. If I don’t have Gayle, I will probably have him.

        • DMC says:

I hear you Mito and IF he does that I’m sure we’ll all say we are not surprised etc..
What makes me hesitate is not his alleged bad record but the fact that he is playing for a Rafa (defend minded) team as opposed to a Eddie Howe (attack minded). Plus, he was £5 back then so a “wait and see approach” seems more reasonable. That said, given the compromises we’ll be doing I wouldn’t be surprised if people ended up with £6 mids as their 3rd mid and if so I do agree that he looks primed in that bracket. It would help if he actually played a friendly or two…

Conte has given Kurt Zouma (5.5.) a new contract and then has given him (Zouma, not the contract) to Sparky.
