Stats, Stats and Some More Stats

fantasy-football-memeAs some of you know, I moved to the US last year from the UK. As an FPL enthusiast of many a year, one of the first things I noticed was just how huge the fantasy sports industry is over here. There are several fantasy sports programs on TV and there are regular sports programs (on the main sports channels) with sections dedicated solely to the fantasy side of the game. Imagine Gary Lineker taking 15 minutes out of Match of the day to talk about the players you should bring into your fantasy teams for the following week.
Another thing that grabbed my attention was just how into statistics Americans are when it comes to their sports, and fantasy sports in particular. American Football, Baseball, Basketball, it doesn’t matter.

Two of my favourite things in life are ‘Sports’ and ‘Spreadsheets filled with sports data’. I was in heaven, and I needed to be part of things. I signed up into a friend’s American fantasy football league, despite the fact I had no idea what I was doing. I relied on researching the data from the previous season to guide my team selection. One of the first articles I came across was a piece titled “100 Fantasy Facts”, written by one of the most recognized of fantasy experts over here, ESPN’s Matthew Berry. It did exactly what it said on the tin. It was a long list of factual snippets, to help readers decide who to recruit for their fantasy teams. I loved the format and always thought it would make an interesting option for a FPL article.

And so here we are. My tribute to a much more established and knowledgeable fantasy writer than I will ever be. And my attempt to bring you, the FF247 community, some of those trends and quirks within FPL stats that might have passed you by. I wondered if I could get to 247 facts, but that was too ambitious. 100 facts seemed to boring. So the only logical conclusion was to stop at 133. Well, why not?

My disclaimer: Facts can be found to support almost any argument. I haven’t gone into this to talk up (or talk down) any particular player. Instead, I’ve cut the data from last season (and in some cases the last few seasons) many different ways and made observations along the way. Ignore what you want. Use what you want. Just remember, you can’t argue with the facts. You just can’t. That’s why they’re called ‘Facts’.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hi folks, here is my squad just now … appreciate any thought, thanks.

    Cech / Hennessey
    Alderweireld / Cedric / Azilicueta / Francis / O’Shea
    Fabregas / Stirling / Milner / Walcott / Wanyama
    Rooney / Benteke / Deeney

Looks well balanced mate! Some might question the double Liverpool coverage (Milner + Benteke) but both seem good value so wouldn’t worry too much.

Hart and Mignolet got 14 cleansheets each I think…!! plus I think they rotate too..And are safe bet on either save or cleansheet points..!! Among the top 5 scoring(fpl points obviously) keepers from last year…!!
Gonna go with 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 mostly..so the 5th defender doesn’t really matter that much..!!

Not sure about both Milner and Benteke..!! Benteke most probably staying..Without getting Pelle in..I can still get Aguero in by a swap with Rooney as I have 2.0 in the bank..!!

Or thinking of Using WC in GW4..when ManC play Watford to get him in..!!

What do you say…?? Are any of my Arguments valid..!!
And suggest someone in place of Milner..

    Hiya F247 legends,

I’m pretty happy with my team, but I feel that I would like to have Benteke in for the first couple of weeks, instead of J Rod. This means I have to find 1.5m. I am happy to spare Vardy for Deeney, but need some other casualties.

When Kun becomes available then I will get rid of a key midfielder + Benteke because Kun will get me points. I will also be 1.5m closer if I can find the funds for Benteke now. Can you see any areas where I can make up the monies?

    Give me the monies…

Midfield heavy so I’d downgrade Afellay to begin with (who knows how he will fit in in the Premier League so drop and keep an eye on him).

      • jamalsauce says:

and get a dirt cheap player in instead? Are there any good alternatives to Azpi?

        • DMC says:

Sinclair at 5.0 for afellay seems reasonable but not enough for Tekkers.
If you really want him you need either downgrade 0.5 with azpi / bellerin + the Vardy -deeney one or maybe just do Ozil-Milner and there’s your 1.5 ( which comes with double Liverpool cover). I’d prefer the later In all honesty.

Afternoon ladies and gents, posting my first RMT, any thoughts would be appreciated! I know Mert or Kos would be a safer bet than Bell but I’m hoping his performance last season should have earned him a regular starting spot, what do you think? If so then his attacking combined with Arsenal’s solidity could work quite nicely…

      PunkDragon says:

The team looks good except the midfield, which I feel is a bit too expensive at the moment, At any time, you are going to be leaving Mane or Erickson (I am assuming) on the bench. Why not get a better rotater with a slightly lower price tag and use it elsewhere, like in the striking department when you have two maybes – Falcao and JRod. Other than that, I’d think about starting Alderweireld – even if against ManUnited. Is Targett a guaranteed starter?
