Fantasy World Cup Russia Introduction 2018

Welcome to Fantasy World Cup Russia Tips 2018. “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.” You know you want to! Stop fighting it. You know full well when you see that first World Cup RMT come in you’ll have that feeling, that sense, you just have to take part too. But you can’t, you swore you’d take a fantasy break, you needed a fantasy break. It’s been a long season and it takes its toll. But now you’re thinking you’ll maybe take a peek, just to see what it’s all about… We’ve had people swear blind upon completion of the FPL season that we will see them in August and not a moment before. And who can blame them? We’ve also had many people say this before and then ended up competing with them to the bitter end in summer tournaments!

The game is finally live anyway, and you can access it here – FIFA World Cup

The official FF247 league can be accessed HERE or the code itself is KHC1BUJ8

It may seem strange to see an ‘intro’ article at this point given as we have already started previewing the groups but we just got tired of waiting for them to get their act together! Just in case you did miss it though we have already looked at Group A here and Group B here. Groups C to H will follow in due course, at the rate of one a day between now and next Thursday.

The Rules
The rules themselves are accessible via THIS LINK but here’s our quick take away / need to know overview of them…

    • SCORING
The scoring itself is pretty much as per FPL.
    • FORMAT
The format is more UCL though. For those who aren’t familiar with this it basically means a tad more planning as you can sub players in before they have played to replace those that already have. A quick example would be to pick a Russian guy, let’s call him Vladimir, for arguments sake. And maybe an English guy, let’s call him Boris. Given as Vladimir plays on Day 1 you can put him in your X1 and see how he does, whilst placing Boris on your bench. If you like what you see from Vladimir then you can leave him in the team. If he has a stinker then you can simply activate manual subs and bring Boris in to replace him for his later game.
    • MANUAL SUBS / AUTO SUBS
If you activate a manual sub then your right to auto subs (as per FPL) disappears. You have the option to do either. Manual subs is your best bet we feel as you control who comes in and you get 4 more shots at getting it right, basically.
    • CAPTAIN
The Captain Armband works in much the same way as UCL and not FPL. You may change your captain after each round (if he was not sent off) with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.
    • TRANSFERS
      Before the game begins: UNLIMITED
Between the group stages: 1 per round
      Before the quarter-finals: 3 transfers
      Before the semis: 5 transfers
      Before the final: 5 transfers
    • WILDCARD
You get 1 wildcard and you can play it anytime you like prior to the start of a round.
    • CHIPS
There are chips as per FPL, sort of. Given the main sponsor we are just surprised they haven’t called them fries.

MAXIMUM CAPTAIN
You can play this once and it basically means that whoever your highest scoring player is in that particular round gets your armband.

BENCH BOOST
Pretty much just as per FPL – you get all 15 playing in that round.

      Matt says:

Hey GP. How are you mate?

So you are focusing all your funds in midfield and attack and going budget defence? It seems like you are also going with names people haven’t mentioned yet. I like that approach and it’s something I’m thinking of doing. Only worry would be Ozil as he’s pissing about with injuries again. I don’t know about Sauls game time either that Spanish midfield is a bit of a minefield right now.

      • Hi Matt

        How’s your health mate?

Yeah I just chucked that one together but the spread of money will likely be this. Certain players may come and go.

        • Matt says:

It’s not too bad now mate cheers.

Fair enough and it could definitely pay off! I’m veering more towards top and bottom heavy with a mixed midfield. I’m just seeing a lot of value in wingbacks right now with midfielders not really appealing too much. This could all change though when I start seeing RMTs and ideas start flying.

      Rosco77 says:

Proper GP team that! Defence … what is that!! If it were anyone else I’d say you need balance, but I thought that towards the back end of the season(when you did your last tips article) and boy did you prove me wrong!! I like it! Looking forward to some serious FPL strategy talk (aided by alcohol) with you next month!

Oh and props for having the first RMT! Mitro would aprove! 😉

      Colriles says:

Hey GP. For a cheapish defense, the attack looks well balanced. Can’t say I know much about your defenders smile Tough to say which of the top priced fwds will come good, so I like your mix of “2nd tier” fwds. Best of luck mate.

      • Thank you Colriles. I hope you’re living well.

I see streams of goals coming from about 25 forwards in this World Cup.

        • DMC says:

GP – I agree with this approach, but I also see loads of CS from the bigger teams. I also think you need at least one from Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar. I have Lewandowski too atm and will be hard pressed to sell him.

        • DMC

It certainly does feel strange not to have Ronaldo.

I’m hoping my Coutinho in midfield covers Neymar and I’m not big on Argentina’s chances so Messi doesn’t seem a must. Actually considering a small wager on them not getting out of the group.

        • DMC says:

You’re being lured by Iceland doing it again. Could happen, but one thing is to go through with Austria and Hungary in the Euros. Different thing when it’s a WC and you’re facing Croacia and Nigeria. Argentina were finalists last time out and Sampaoli will surely tighten things up (perhaps making Messi less appealing actualy). I can see them on 9 points to be fair.

        • In my opinion they have not had a defence of note in years and were struggling really badly to qualify. Add in that Romero misses the tournament and Caballero may have to be relied on in goal then I think there is potential for trouble.

To me, D is the most difficult group.

        • DMC says:

Those are fair points and it is a thigh group.

And Messi ain’t Maradona after all.

        • Zed Leppelin says:

It was Messi (not Maradona) Magic that put them in this tournament though 😉 Yeah, Argentina don’t have a defense, only one I’d consider is Messi out of their lot as he can make magic out of thin air… But he’s just so pricey, and the game is well priced, tough to get a well balanced group (and you need that for the bench-boost too) with those 12m players in there… I’m currently thinking of giving a pass to those three too at the moment… Griezmann could easily outscore them for instance and he saves 2m right there… Guerrero was top scorer in Copa Americas in 2011 and 2015 where Neymar and Messi played too… Then there’s Cavani for instance, or Suarez, in easy groups…

    • 13.5

I like a lot of them guys, could see my team having a lot of them guys once I create my first draft. I assume I will slowly move out some of the South Americans as I get a better idea on the other 27 teams and who might be good value.

    Kralin says:

‘…you swore you’d take a fantasy break…’ Oh God, don’t. I really do need a break from playing the game.

Anyhow, good luck all in your WC fantasy endeavours.

      Rosco77 says:

You’re not playing Kralin!? Come on!! Ps is it just me or does Harry Maguire have a really whiny face? For a big fella he doesn’t arf whinge on!

      • Kralin says:

Harry Maguire’s face reminds me vaguely of Mark Burgess from The Chameleons. Maybe they’re related or maybe he’ll start singing ‘as high as you can go’.

    • 14.2
      Matt says:

Play the game Kralin you know you want to…..

      • Kralin says:

I’ve had the serious shakes since the game went live. I’ve been chain-drinking Special Brew to distract myself, that and trying to predict the fixtures for 18/19 based on the hazy visions I see as I stagger down the street, shouting at parked cars and frightened people anxiously talking into their phones.

    Colriles says:

Ok y’all here goes. RMT por favor!

    Rosco77 says:

Nice work from Dele and Welbeck! Dammit I’m getting excited for England…,,

Rumours suggest Liverpool are set to confirm the signing of Nabil Fekir tomorrow.

    Otieno says:

When are we considering wildcard? I’m looking at after round 2 when qualified and exiting teams might rest their regular team and give more fringe players some pitch time.

    • 18.1
      Rosco77 says:

Makes sense in theory, in reality I’ll just sit on it till I realise my team is sh!t ( probably after game1) and hit that shizzle… in reality I’ll probably still have it in the semis! No plan is my plan!

    • 18.2

@Otieno, someone asked this like a week or two and I gave some long answer, can’t remember all I said, but to make a long story short I think I preferred right before the quarterfinals, that way you can really exploit the WC given to you in the round of 16 to attack the easier fixtures, knowing that you will have a WC again to fix the team immediately after. Other than that possibly before the 2nd or 3rd round make the most sense to me, but I will do my best to hold onto it until Quarters.

    • 18.3
      Zed Leppelin says:

I think just before the Quarters like Mito said! The plan at least is to have good enough team for the first three rounds, so that you have two WCs back-to-back in round of 16 and quarters… But it obviously depends on how the play unfolds, if I feel I need it in round 3, then I’ll use it… But in theory you have 8 teams that drop out of the cup after round of 16, so there will more likely be too many players in your team who don’t play anymore, and with only 3 FTs at that point, WC could be the best there.
