Captain Picks Fantasy Football Game-week 22 – Fantasy Premier League 2015/16

Captain picks tipsIt’s time to get up, dust yourselves down and get back on that broken pony already after what was probably another dismal game-week for the good majority. Many a dormant fantasy manager will (not) be celebrating this morning as they find that their long term plan of not actually doing anything yielded a handy captain haul of 32 from Rooney whereas those slightly more proactive managers are once again left wondering why they even bothered! No point moping around in your underpants cursing Kun though as we have another game-week incoming on Saturday and it’s a quick-fire chance to right the wrongs of the last one, if that’s possible. Let’s take a look at the runners and riders for that all important armband for game-week 22…[clear]

Sergio Aguero – Crystal Palace (H)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Allow me to get the formalities of this article out of the way. Sergio Kun Aguero plays at home this weekend. For many FPL managers that’s all they need to know. I’m sure he’ll be an overwhelmingly popular pick… so let’s take a look at why it might *not* be a good idea to trust him with the armband.

Since his first big injury of the season, he’s featured (and started) in 6 matches, playing 428 minutes in all. During those minutes he’s managed to score 2 goals. No assists to his name. City failed to score at home against Everton earlier this week and Palace can actually be quite a tough team to break down. Perhaps a punt on Kolarov, who was rested against Everton, would be a better shout? Crystal Palace have failed to score in their last 4 Premier League matches.

We all know that Aguero’s capable of insane things. City are due a rout and, when playing at the Etihad, anything is possible… even 5 goals in 20 minutes. An early penalty being awarded to the home side – a tap-in from De Bruyne’s pinpoint cross into the 6 yard box – that’s all it could take for absolute carnage to ensue. Look beyond him at your peril.

Dimitri Payet – Newcastle (A)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Don’t you wish that you’d owned this guy last game-week? If you did… don’t you wish that you’d captained him? If you did.. please come and write the next article for us!

The guy is class. What a free-kick against Bournemouth that was. Brilliant nutmeg and run at goal for the assist as well. He plays against a Newcastle side that, although admittedly growing in confidence, haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 7 matches in all competitions. Dmitri bagged a brace in the reverse fixture this season and it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him do it again on Saturday afternoon.

Harry Kane – Sunderland (H)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Just when the wind seemed to be blowing again, the HurriKane has faltered, once again entering a mini drought in front of goal; just a solitary assist in the last 3 game-weeks. However, before that, he scored 3 goals in 2 games. That included a brace against Norwich at home. He’s also scored twice against West Ham at White Hart Lane and hit home a hat-trick against Bournemouth earlier on in the season.
Therefore, it is clear Kane likes a relatively ‘easy fixture’ to harvest his FPL points, which Sunderland at home does indeed appear to be. The Black Cats haven’t been pushovers lately, but when you consider that Harry has taken the joint-most shots in the Premier League so far this season (tied with Coutinho) and has the highest shot accuracy out of anyone in the top 10 on that list, backing him with the armband this weekend sounds very tempting indeed. Stats and logic often (but not in this crazy season!) prevail.

Riyad Mahrez – Aston Villa (A)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Mahrez is actually quite a weird name isn’t it? We’ve become so accustomed to seeing it in all of our teams, but the more I think about it, the stranger it sounds. Riyad Mahrez. I take that back… it’s actually just cool. Almost villain-like… mwuahahaha.

Anyway, what a player, who time and time again has produced goals and assists to help lift his team to success. Earlier this season, in the reverse fixture, he didn’t score in the 3-2 thriller, but conducted the game magnificently, contributing 2 assists in one of many man-of-the match performances that he’s produced in recent months.

Villa finally pieced a win together last game-week, but it was against a Crystal Palace side who are currently woeful in front of goal, which still doesn’t explain what Hennessey was thinking as that ball came towards him. The question is: can Mahrez end his 4 match drought? Can he strike back with another hat-trick away from home? Can he be the Villans’ villain? I really don’t see why not. Leicester are back to winning ways.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – Watford (H)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Here’s one we haven’t heard much about for a while! This is my final pick and I was getting a bit bored of picking the usual suspects… then I noticed that Watford have conceded 2 goals in each of their last 4 Premier League matches. So this is one for the brave or the stupid, but let’s face it, this season couldn’t really get any stranger.

Just cast your mind back to the first 10 gameweeks of last season: no serious FPL manager would’ve dreamt of excluding Siggy from their teams. Now, over a year on, things have changed. Leicester are a good team these days. Matic isn’t the best CDM in the world anymore. FF247 t-shirts have spread across the land. However, good-old Gylfi has grabbed a goal in his last two matches and is on penalty duty too, so perhaps this is the start of something good once again for the classy Swansea midfielder.

Fixture: 7
Explosiveness: 5

I hope you all have a great weekend! Good luck with whoever you choose.

Brilliant article mate, well done and many thanks for putting it together for us

This season is silliest one yet, eh? 35 points for my lot actually resulted in mostly green arrows and 3/3 H2H wins. Bonkers, to say the least laugh

No one else is captain material

Keep Ozil this week or move him on for Mahrez vs Villa. Hmm, tough one. I had this in mind when playing my WC but still unsure what to do. Thoughts?

      AT says:

Very tricky, both hit a few blanks now so hard to call on form.

How much have you made on Ozil?

      • NIN says:

Nothing really. I got him late enough so wont lose feck all. Not really bothered about funds anyway, it’s points i’m after 😉

        • AT says:

Umm…I would probably take a punt then..
Although I didn’t watch the Leicester game so not a clue if he has been simply unlucky or there has been a real dip in form.

        • NIN says:

Indeed, i’ve been working nights so haven’t seen anything either. I’ll watch the highlights on Footy Tube now in a bit and see what the story is. On a pure points basis i think it’s a good move but am aware that 2 FT’s banked at this stage of the season can be huge as players get tired and / or injured.

        • AT says:

Yeah, lost my double last week and would probably have come in handy this week to be honest!

Save if you can or want to but I would never personally refrain from making a transfer just in case someone gets injured down the line.

    AT says:

Payet looking like a must, trying to find a way to bring him in. Think I’ve got it down to:

    a. KDB to Payet
    b. Alli to Payet and Bertrand to Simpson, -4

Don’t really want to get rid of either of my midfielders to be honest but I don’t think my heart would take Payet against Newcastle if he weren’t in my team!

Alternatively, got 1FT and £1.3m in the bank if you think you can do any better 😉

    Thanks in advance.

      NIN says:

Ozil out or save the FT, for me. Bert > Bell this week too i think. Close one though.

      • AT says:

Bought Ozil below £9m so wouldn’t be pretty trying to get him back in. I don’t think his fixtures are bad enough to throw him out just yet, personally.

My thinking with De Bruyne was that I already have Aguero but then maybe that’s why I should get Alli out…(just not sure about it for a hit). The plan would be Simpson in place of Bellerin if I brought him in for Bertrand (ideally Fuchs but too much). Also, I go into most GWs thinking West Brom won’t score but they keep on surprising me these days.

        • NIN says:

What rank is your team at now mate? It’s not linked on here…

        • AT says:

Around 200k, I know, never got round to doing it!

        • NIN says:

Roughly the same as me, 275k here.

I wouldn’t take a hit to lose Alli this week mate. That could go all sorts of bad considering the fixture. As for Kev, he’s just about the only player that i’m worried about not owning just now. There’s a potential boat load of points in him over the next ten or so weeks.

I’ll stick to my original thoughts though. As is or Ozil –> Payet.

        • AT says:

Ahh, it’s simply the fear of not having Payet.

Non of my ML rivals have Alli or Payet and points potential wise Payet is huge. Another key reason is literally have only enough funds tonight (which could change if Alli doesn’t go up and Payet does).
But I understand your point, Alli has great fixtures.

Would happily lose Ozil but £0.5m on him is a lot to throw away following two blanks.

        • NIN says:

Agreed, i wouldn’t sell him just because of a couple of 2’s either. However, if it’s a high-output differential that you’re after then Payet in for him makes sense. He may not be a differential for much longer though. Just under 14% now but that’s way below Ozil (55.5%).

        • AT says:

          Very true.

Ahh, I can see this being a late one tonight 😉

        • NIN says:

Yep, good luck with that one! Tough call to make.

        • AT says:

Other reason is if I don’t bring him in this GW then I won’t bring him in for City and he’ll probably punish me in both! haha

      Raziel says:

I have both Alli and Payet, personally reckon Payet will be more of a must long term. On that note, Alli is f-ing awesome. I don’t know what to do. I have a frontline of 8 awesome players.

      • KI says:

        Raz,

I’ve sweated this one, and blundered last week. I think Payet’s the keeper, as he was last fall. Alli’s very good, but he’s going to rotate with Arnie, depending on fixtures (KDB and Mahrez [penos] are my other keepers). The problem, as I see it, is that Alli’s just 19, and is going to go missing periodically. He certainly did against Leicester this weekend. So, love the Spurs youngsters as I do, it’s Payet in a strong front 8.
