Fantasy football Trends From The Top – GW31

Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 08.55.05

Welcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. What have the leaders been up to and what will our leaders being doing as we edge towards the end of the season? More importantly, how will they approach the ensuing DGW bonanza set for DGW’s 34 and 37? Let’s take a look and see what’s going on.

How are our current leaders going to approach GW 34?

Unlike many of my league competitors who have deployed nearly every chip and wildcard, I have failed to use one so, like many of you, I have been planning and plotting potential possibilities (I love alliteration) for the plethora of double games which will take place in GW 34 and 37. I am debating if the proper course of action is to deploy the wildcard during GW 33 and the bench boost for GW 34 or to wait until nearly the end of the season for GW 37 tactics.

This led me to wonder, how many wildcards have our top managers used? I was quite surprised to see that 7 out of the 10 had used both wildcards. Apparently, their strategies will not include a wildcard. (Players in positions 3, 5 and 8 are the ones with an available wildcard).

What was another interesting observation for GW 31?

An interesting observation this week was the fact that 9 out of 10 managers possess Sergio Aguero. Why? This may sound cruel and I may jinx myself here but I wonder if Aguero will pan out for the remaining part of the season as Manchester City seems to be focused perhaps on other priorities (Champions League)? With a hefty £13.6 price tag and an ownership rate of 34.2%, he isn’t much of a differential and when compared to Vardy, he is still 57 points behind. Granted, his next 2 matches are against Bournemouth and West Brom and he does have DGW 34 so perhaps some folks can afford to have him onboard. Any thoughts here?

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Gameweek 31?

Goalkeepers: This week was rather interesting as our top managers selected 7 different goalkeepers. Butland was the most popular pick coming in at 30% ownership while Hennessey had 20% ownership and Forster, Gomes, Hart, Schmeichel and Courtois each came in with 10%.

Defenders: As usual, we saw a plethora of defenders played by the top ten; a total of 13 different players. Alderweireld was the most popular picks as 9 of the 10 managers selected him. Huth came in at 40% ownership while Williams and Bellerin each had 30%. Sagna and Fuchs had a 20% ownership rate while the remaining defenders all came in with 10% ownership: Koscielny, Monreal, Dann, Coleman, Clyne, Nyom and Daniels.

Midfielders: When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had only 9 different picks. 90% of managers selected Mahrez and Alli followed by Payet and Ozil with 60%, Sigurdsson with 50%, Arnautovic with 40% and Eriksen, Willian and Fabregas each with 10%.

Forwards: This week, the front line consisted of only 5 picks among the top managers. 100% had Kane and 100% of our top managers selected Kane as this week’s captain. 90% had Aguero, 70% had Vardy, and 10% had Rondon and Berahino.

In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for Gameweek 31 were Alderweireld, Alli, Payet, Mahrez, Ozil, Sigurdsson, Vardy, Kane and Aguero as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.

Other interesting facts:

* The average score for Gameweek 31 among the top 10 was 82.6 points which was an impressive 26.6 points above average for the week.

* The average team/club value was £107.9 with £111 being the most expensive team and £104.8 being the cheapest team.

* Most of the leaders have deployed all their chips.

* England represented only 20% the leader board with the following countries being the following: Australia (currently in the lead), Sweden, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Thailand, Ireland, Malaysia and Scotland.

* Two of our leaders have been in the top 10 for over 17 weeks!

Hope this was useful!

Best of luck in Gameweek 32!

Finally decided on my DGW strategy, I dont have a wild card left but I do have bench boost.
There is no point in me taking loads of hits removing attacking players who are probably going to be getting points that week anyway. The only players im removing and swapping are defenders and a keeper who I dont see getting me a clean sheet that week. So Butland>DeGea, Apzil>Monreal, Daniels>Darmian,
The only change to my attack will be Arni>Coutihno

My full squad for bench boost should be this roughly:
    Schmeichel, DeGea
    Simpson, Bellerin, Monreal, Darmian, Dier
    Alli, Mahrez, Payet, Coutihno, Siggurdson
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

Heres hoping that spurs, sigi and Leicster smash it that week and well all of them can be my differentials because not many wild carders are going to have them right. I dont expect to match a full DGW team, but if im lucky with clean sheets I could do ok.

Thanks Beka for the insights smile
Going with Maxwell, Watson(c) and Khwaja.

Pellegrini on Hart: “I don’t think muscle injuries can heal in one week. They normally need three or four weeks.”

Ok there goes my DGW keeper! My plan is out the window. WC33 now instead of loading up DGW players one by one. Looking to bring in DDG or Cech if fit.

Good stuff Beka, many thanks for this as always.

Re Aguero; i will be keeping him for sure but may have to rethink Otamendi as the City defence is a bit of a nightmare these days. Defo wouldn’t risk going into a City double week without Kun though. Chelsea and Newcastle aren’t exactly rock solid themselves.

      NIN,

I’m sure you’re well aware, but both Man City and Liverpool have CL and Europa just before BB?dgw 34 (and after WC?gw33). Any complications here? I’d figure them both to bow out of their respective competitions, but they could be knackered-City because Pellegrini knows his owners really care, and Liverpool, because Klopo has to maintain face, playing Dortmund. Sigh-never-ending complications.

      • NIN says:

Howdy KI. Yeah the euro games may be untimely but I still wouldn’t feel confident in my team for a dgw with no Kun in there. If he does shit in it then at least everyone will feel the burn. However, if he kicks off with a few goals then those who binned him will be in big trouble. I love a good risk / punt most of the time but not with Aguero.

        • KI says:

          NIN,

I totally agree about Kun. Drop him, he kills you. I’m more concerned about getting in other Liverpool and Man City players. Given both defences, I’d be inclined to get keepers only, plus midfielders-Firmino, Coutinho, and Yaya or DeBruyne (depending on his return). [Silva’s fragility worries me too much]. Given the Euro fatigue, I am nervous about rotation.

Ugh, how is Afobe dropping so quickly with just a paltry 1.3% ownership. Pants. May have to switch early as money is tight. All aboard the dodgy train smile

DMC, thanks for the set up there! smile
I’ve created the best I can figure with Kun and was about to post but thought I would try my hand at one without the (not so much lately) deadly Argentinian. Here are both for your viewing pleasure/pain!
*Disclaimer* I am not choosing 15 DGWers as I think that Mahrez and Kane are easily capable of outscoring in one game those DGW players who would be replacements for them.
