This is it for another year. We are closing the season with the always-exciting Decision Day, in which the fate of many teams will be decided. It was a very busy round last week, especially on Sunday in which some teams were left happy, others disappointed and a few still hopeful. Portland Timbers and DC United booked their tickets for the post-season, while Vancouver was eliminated. Montreal, Columbus, RSL and LA Galaxy left their destinies for the final day. Gameweek 34 Review DC United clinched a spot in the playoffs by beating NYCFC (3-1). Atlanta United won at home against Chicago Fire (2-1), while the other title contender, NYRB, won away at Philadelphia Union (0-1). Both results mean that the title race will go down to the final day! Montreal Impact shutout Toronto FC (2-0) to keep ...[Read More]
The quick and short round is in the books and now we are heading towards the last big double gameweek (DGW) for this season. Three of the four matches followed expectation as home wins, but many managers were left bitterly disappointed after the surprise defeat of Minnesota at home by the usually travel-sick Rapids. It was a good week for LAFC, whose win left them tied with Chicago Fire’s record for the most points by an expansion club. They are now aiming to reach 60 points with their two remaining games to steal the record solely for themselves. In sadder news, Orlando City were making records of a different kind (i.e. ones they never wanted to happen). With their latest loss they equalled the record set by Minnesota last year for most goals conceded in a season (70) and with their remai...[Read More]
We expected it to be an exciting round as the season approaches its final stages, and it was! Fantasy-wise, many managers had to swallow disappointment as the two most popular captain picks, Martinez and Almiron, failed to deliver the expected results. Nevertheless, 39 goals were produced including 5 braces from Rooney, Blanco, Picault, Diomande and Rodriguez. Philadelphia, LAFC and SKC clinched playoff spots, but the big news from this round was last year’s Champions, Toronto FC, crashing out of playoff contention. They joined Orlando, Minnesota, Chicago, Colorado and San Jose on the elimination pile. On a brighter note, the 16 year old defender George Bello scored his first MLS goal for Atlanta, which was a delight for his owners in FMLS. 16-year-old @_georgebello scores his first...[Read More]
As the end of the season is fast approaching, every week is getting increasingly tense in the fight for a post-season place. The last week was no exception, with some big results. FC Dallas became the first team in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff spot. Amongst the many goals, we witnessed five braces (two of them from former Man United players, Rooney and Ibrahimovic). The latter said that he is now concentrated in his career and in typical Zlatan style stated that he wasn’t interested in the FIFA Puskas awards as he wasn’t included! https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1046074731563274241 Gameweek 31 Review Both DGW teams (NYCFC and Chicago) had mixed fortunes, winning at home and losing away. Toronto had a big home win (4-1) against New England and LA Galaxy achieved the same by bea...[Read More]
The end of the season is fast approaching and the battle for the playoffs proved exciting in the last round, with some surprises as always. Atlanta United clinched a bye in the first postseason round, while LAFC became the third MLS team to cross the 50 points mark in an inaugural season. Gameweek 30 Review Portland Timbers started the round with a win and then suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Minnesota United. The 12-game unbeaten streak for Seattle Sounders ended after they lost both fixtures, against Philadelphia Union (who won their second game as well, hosting SKC) and LA Galaxy. It was a mixed bag for Columbus Crew, with a loss and a win. Vancouver Whitecaps slipped down further after a home defeat to FC Dallas. Elsewhere, Montreal Impact managed a draw with NYCFC, while ...[Read More]
Another exciting round is behind us. We witnessed some real goal-fests, with two five-goal thrillers, two six-goal stunners and an incredible eight-goal extravaganza (in total 47 goals, including 5 braces and a hat trick)! Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the hat trick while Zlatan Ibrahimovic made the headlines again by scoring a stunning 500th career goal. With the regular season moving towards its endgame, the playoff tables are beginning to take shape, with the top two now qualified in the East and the bottom two now eliminated in the West. We’re starting to see frantic reshuffling in the tables, including a switch at the top in both Conferences last week (Atlanta reinstated their lead in the East, while Sporting KC removed Dallas from the top in the West). DC United went a step closer i...[Read More]
The small round is over. It wasn’t what many fantasy football managers were hoping for, as New York City FC suffered their first home defeat when New England Revolution managed only their second away win of the season, through a first MLS goal from Wright. Without playing this week, Atlanta United became the second team to clinch a playoff place, thanks to DC United dropping points. Gameweek 28 Review It wasn’t a great start to the mini gameweek when the only DGW team, NYCFC, were shutout at home for the first time this year by New England Revolution, who needed just one goal to walk away with the three points and leave the Blues empty handed. In the second game they did slightly better, with a very late equaliser by David Villa to earn a point after Wayne Rooney had earlier ...[Read More]
Another big double game week is behind us. As expected there were quite a few rotations, which led to the usual frustration of single game week players like Rusnak (20pts), Vela (19pts) and Kreilach (18pts) outscoring many of the chosen DGW players like Valeri (5pts) and BWP (2pts). Nevertheless, we witnessed 55 goals including six braces and a hat trick. The highlight of the week went to Seattle Sounders, making a season longest winning streak (8) in the post shootout MLS era. In the meantime, one of their prominent stars, American soccer legend Clint Dempsey, announced his retirement. He finished with more than 150 goals as a professional, plus 57 more with the USMNT. Among those professional goals are 72 while playing for Fulham and Tottenham, the most by any American in an overseas lea...[Read More]
Before everything else, I would like to thank Chipster for his excellent coverage for the last two weeks while I was away on my summer holidays. We had an exciting Rivalry round with six famous derbies. Some went quiet and other produced the usual fireworks. With his latest goal, Ibrahimovic is now just one strike away from his 500th career goal. The big story of the week was the new MLS goal scoring record for a single season (28) by Josef Martinez from Atlanta United. The new scoring 👑. Josef Martínez of @ATLUTD. #ORLvATL // Heineken #RivalryWeek https://t.co/p6W4FjVcT5 — Major League Soccer (@MLS) August 25, 2018 Gameweek 26 Review It was a slow start with the Hudson River, Texas and El Trafico derbies each finishing as underwhelming 1-1 draws. Things picked up in the 401 ...[Read More]
It was a disappointing start to the double gameweek (DGW) for some teams and, consequently, for some fantasy managers too. A few big names completely failed to deliver on the promise of the DGW (Zlatan 3pts, Valeri 4pts) and were easily outshone and outscored by SGW counterparts (J Martinez 10pts, Lodeiro 13pts). It wasn’t all DGW doom and gloom though. Anybody picking Rooney (19pts) or the LAFC backline (16-19pts) will have done well and any chancers picking the likes of RSL’s Rusnak or DCU’s Fisher (both on 16pts) will be feeling pretty pleased with themselves (and rightly so). Thankfully LAFC saved the day for most of us, with two wins (and two shutouts) to bump many managers well over the hundred point barrier in the end. Gameweek 25 Review It was a record-equalling week in MLS history...[Read More]
While the English Premier League kicked off its new season, over the pond the Fall season continued in typical MLS style with unexpected results all over the shop. In the Cascadia Cup, Portland’s unbeaten run of 15 games was finally snapped by the visitors from Vancouver. Elsewhere, it was surprising to see Philadelphia make it 3 wins in their last 4 away games, considering they only had 1 win in their previous 8 road matches. In fantasy terms there were few big scorers, as the goals were shared around much more than we’ve seen recently. For example, across Saturday’s 8 games, 21 goals were scored by 20 different goal-scorers, with the only brace coming from the most unlikely source (a Philly defender, playing away, with only 0.67% ownership!). Further multiple goal-scorers did follow on S...[Read More]
After a long wait the Fall season finally started, but its arrival brought both pleasure and pain to fantasy managers. While those with underperforming teams may have been glad of the opportunity for a fresh start, everybody else felt robbed as they lost the luxury of their massive bank balances. It was a day of levelling when all managers woke up with a reset budget and newly priced players with some of them repositioned. It was an equal challenge for all to pick a decent squad, with only grim prospects of switcheroos due to affordability. Nevertheless, it was an exciting round with some surprising results. The highlight went to the Houston Dynamo vs Sporting Kansas City game, which saw 3 red and 8 yellow cards (including the ejection of the host team manager)! Gameweek 23 Review After a ...[Read More]
